Location: Albemarle, Virginia
Salutation: To The Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Albemarle (, )
Filing Court and Date: Circuit, 1856-January-25
Ending Court and Date: Circuit, 1856-May-20
General Petition Information
Abstract: Evelina Becket represents that DANIEL GOINGS, a free man of color, “removed from the County of Albemarle to the state of Virginia.” She reports that “in the year 1845 … he returned to Albemarle for the purpose of collecting money due him there for land and perhaps other property sold by him before his removal.” Becket further laments that Goings “was taken suddenly ill and died on 21st of January 1846, having first made a nuncupative will,” in which he directed his executor to “collect all money due said testator and [to] apply it … to the support and maintenance of your Oratrix and her six children.” Becket states that she and her minor children, who are “also children of the said Testator,” still reside in Ohio. She charges that James E. Chapman, Goings’s administrator, “has never settled any account or in any way appropriated any part of the estate to the benefit of your Oratrix and her children,” even though “for several years past, he has been promising to settle up, but as yet he has wholly failed to do so.” Becket prays that Chapman be forced to settle his accounts and “pay to your Oratrix and her children what may be found due them.”
Documents also mention the name of MICHAEL GOINGS.
