I John Via of the County of Amhurst being Very Sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be given unto God, Calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all, I give and Recommend my Soul unto the hand of all mighty God that gave and my Body I Recommend to the Earth nothing Doubting but at the General Resurrection I Shall Receive the same again, and as Touching Such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bles me in this life, I give Demiss and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form

The Petition of a Number of the Inhabitants of the County of Buckingham and the Parish of Tillotson sheweth—
Whereas your Honorable Housem in the last Session of assembly passed an act to repeal an act for Incorpirating the Protestant Episcopal Society, and for other purposes; by which other purposes the Episcopalians laim all the Glebes, Churches, Plate and all othe[r] things, the property of the Late Established Church of England, and therefore we do correctly remonstrate against the other purposes of the s’d [said] Act.–……………..

1791 Nov 7 – A number of Freeholders in Buckingham County show the General Assembly of Virginia that an Inspection of tobacco at the mouth of Bent Creek in this county will be of infinite utility – it being the most eligible situation on the river between Lynchburg and Warminster with an easy road for the conveyance of produce from the adjacent counties (to wit) Campbell, Prince Edward, Charlotte, and Amherst. The petitioners ask that an act be passed for erecting warehouses at the mouth of Bent Creek on the lands of John Horsley.

1812 Corp. Jesse Gowan of Buckingham County served in Henshaw’s Fifth Virginia Infantry Regiment, according to “War of 1812 Bounty Lands in Illinois” by Lowell M. Volkel. Jesse Gowan received Bounty Land Warrant No. 7257 September 17, 1818 for a quarter section of land in Illinois located in Township 5 North, Range 5 West. In 1811 Congress had authorized bounty land to be given to the veterans of federal service. Every man who enlisted for five years or the “duration of the war” received a bonus of $16 and 160.

1812 MILITARY: Virginia Militia of the War of 1812, Vol. I, Pay Rolls, Page 333 shows a Private Jordan Gowin. Time of service shows 5 months and 28 days.acres of land. Non-coms and Officers were entitled to 320 acres.  (See Gowen Manuscript below).

Sarah Going was married about 1918 to Emmett Murphy in Brunswick County, according to Kenneth Smith, a descendant. In the 1900 census of the county, Emmett Murphy was enum-erated as the grandson of William Murphy. William Murphy and Emma Murphy lived in the Maysville township of Buck-ingham County, Virginia from at least 1880 to their deaths.

Emmett Murphy was described as an Indian, but through out various census’ was listed variously black, mulatto and white.

Corp. Jesse Gowan of Buckingham County served in Henshaw’s Fifth Virginia Infantry Regiment, according to “War of 1812 Bounty Lands in Illinois” by Lowell M. Volkel. He received Bounty Land Warrant No. 7257 September 17, 1818 for a quarter section of land in Illinois located in Township 5 North, Range 5 West. In 1811 Congress had authorized bounty land to be given to the veterans of federal service. Every man who enlisted for five years or the “duration of the war” received a bonus of $16 and 160 acres of land. Non-coms and Officers were entitled to 320 acres.

He was married about 1824, wife’ name Elizabeth. She was born about 1809. Appommatox County was formed from Buckingham County in 1845, and William Gowan found himself in the northern part of the new county.

He died September 4, 1906 in Franklin, Kentucky, and she died there January 20, 1917.

Dora Francis Greeno Goins died in 1954 in Franklin County, and he died there in May 1989.

William Gowen of Buckingham County hired Charles Thur-man as his substitute in the company of Capt. John Mosely in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War, according to Flora Newby, a Thurman descendant. She wrote July 28, 2000:

“Charles Thurman was born February 6, 1760 in Buckingham County and died in 1848 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. He enlisted in the Virginia Militia under Capt. Reed and was stationed at Albermarle Barracks guarding British Prisoners. He enlisted six times, all in the Virginia Militia.

Charles Thurman served under Capt John Mosely,and several times under his stepfather, Capt.Nehemiah Evitt, his step-father of Buckingham County. He served under Col. Bluford and Gen. Nathanael Greene. He was at the Battle of Guilford Court House. He substituted for William Gowen under Capt. John Mosely and was with him at the Seige of Yorktown. Charles witnessed Cornwallis deliver his sword to the American officers.”

1675 Oct 4 William VIER (some say this is Amer’s brother while some say this is Amer; but no records to prove Amer had a brother) was one of 102 persons transported by Mr. Henry Aubery and Aubery recorded 5100 acres in Rappahannock County, Virginia on 4 October 1675. The land was situated between branches of Pascattaway and Hodkins Creeks and brances of Mattapony River beginning by an Indian path nigh the Roade to Gellon’s Mill to land of Paggett and Gouldman, to said Aubery’s Quarter (Virginia Patent Book 6, page 565).
