CHEROKEE COUNTY, TEXAS

John M. Goans, a 35 year-old single carpenter, appeared in the 1850 census of Cherokee County, Texas, page 865. He, a native of North Carolina, was living in the household of Thomas G. Moore, No. 411.

John M. Goans, “of Anderson County, Texas,” gave a deed to Jesse T. Jones, according to Cherokee County Deed Book K, page 490. Consideration was $150 on the land located five miles southeast of Rusk, Texas. Later Samuel A. Erwin paid John M. Goans $690 for the property.

On February 17, 1858 John M. Goans, still a resident of Anderson County, gave a deed to Crittenden Chandler for 110 acres of land in Ira L. Wilson Headright, patent No. 340, according to Cherokee County Deed Book M, page 453. Consideration was $400.

On October 11, 1861 John W. Goins of Anderson County gave a deed certificate to Lewis and Nancy Waggoner of Cherokee County on one-half of 1,280 acres given to George Lindsey, “a soldier in the Army of Texas on December 14, 1837,” according to Cherokee County Deed Book Q, page 410.

James Prentice Gowin, second child of Vertis Gowin and America Christine Maddox Gowin, was born January 14, 1938 at Jacksonville, Texas, according to Cherokee County Birth Book 12, page 204. About 1962 he was married to Betty Ann Berry. In 1959 he was a lumber company worker at Jacksonville. In December 1966 James Prentice Gowin was the water superintendant of Centerville, Texas.

Bill Goynes, born June 20, 1904, died September 9, 1973, and “Nila Goynes,” born July 29, 1901, have headstones in Lynch Chapel Cemetery located west of Alto, Texas according to “Cemeteries of Southern Cherokee County, Texas,” by Helen Woodell Crawford. Mrs. Mary Nyla Goynes, 25-year resident of Alto, died July 8, 1980 “in a Tyler hospital” at age 78, according to her obituary in the “Cherokee County Banner” of July 10, 1980. She was buried in Lynches Chapel Cemetery near Alto.
