HOWARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS

William Benjamin Goyne was born about 1867. He was mar-ried October 14, 1886, wife’s name Mary E. They were resi-dents of Nashville, Arkansas in 1890. They later removed to Gregg County, Texas.

William Benjamin Goyne “of Rusk County, Texas” bought 14 acres in the Mary Van Winkle League from P. L. Nolen and Sarah D. Nolen November 17, 1917 for $2,000, according to Gregg County Deed Book 40, page 351. They sold part of this land to E. R. Goyne “of Gregg County,” unidentified, January 12, 1932, according to Gregg County Deed Book 126, page 77.

William Benjamin Goyne bought a 63-acre farm there Novem-ber 25, 1926 from Monroe Radford and Nancy Radford for $820, according to Gregg County Deed Book 53, page 419. This land he sold back to Nancy Redford June 20, 1932, ac-cording to Deed Book 129, page 486.

William Benjamin Goyne stated in an affidavit dated June 24, 1931 that he was “white, 63 years old,” according to Gregg County Deed Book 97, page 73.

William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne gave to J. E. Arnold a warranty deed November 14, 1939 to Lots 1&2, Block 2 in Ludwig Addition in Kilgore, Texas, according to Gregg County Deed Book 246, page 257

Mary E. Goyne died there August 20, 1945, according to Gregg County Deed Book 292, page 474. It is believed that he remar-ried shortly afterward, wife’s name Willie.

William Benjamin Goyne died there September 27, 1956, ac-cording to BVS File 53310.

Mrs. Willie Goyne, “widow” gave a warranty deed to 14 acres for $3,000 to Loy Alvah Goyne, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Edward Roger Goyne, Mrs. Beatrice Goyne Williamson and Mrs. Essie Goyne Borders November 22, 1956, according to Gregg County, Texas Deed Book 495, page 175.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born in 1890 in Nashville, Arkansas. He appear-ed in the 1912 city directory of Houston, Texas as a billing clerk for F. W. Heitmann Hardware Company, rooming at 410 Branch. He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War I and served as a second lieutenant in the infantry in the Battle of St. Mihiel. He was discharged June 20, 1919, according to Gregg County, Texas Discharge Book 11, page 127.

He was married shortly after his discharge to Amie Eva Wise who was born in Brownsville, Texas in 1893. In 1921 he was an accountant living at 435 South Fredonia, Longview, Texas.

Arlie Vernon Goyne received a warranty deed from R. N. and Anna Belle Bullard to seven acres of land for $2,446.25 July 28, 1944, according to Gregg County Deed Book 282, page 463.

On November 6, 1947 Arlie Vernon Goyne entered into a part-nership agreement with Jack Groom concerning a “cleaning and pressing business in Longview known as Goyne Cleaners,” ac-cording to Gregg County Deed Book 317, page 152.

On February 28, 1952 Arlie Vernon Goyne and E. R. Goyne of Gregg County, Loy Alvah Goyne of Sevier County, Arkan-sas and William Benjamin Goyne and his wife Willie Goyne of Gregg County gave a warranty deed to Beatrice Goyne Wil-liamson, a widow and Essie Borders, wife of J. V. Borders and Joe John Short a warranty deed to Lots 1&2, Block 2, Ludwig Place in Kilgore, according to Gregg County Deed Book 373, page 298.

Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise, developers of Holly-wood Park Addition in Longview, gave to the public deed re-strictions pertaining to the addition July 9, 1952, according to Gregg County Deed Book 382, page 3490.

Arlie Vernon Goyne gave an affidavit to the public July 2, 1955 stating, “My wife, Amy E. Goyne died intestate in Longview May 30, 1955. We were the parents of two children, Kathleen Goyne, now married to Dr. John F. Halamicek of Wharton County, Texas and A. V. Goyne, Jr. now of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana,” according to Gregg County Deed Book 469, page 260

Arlie Vernon Goyne, age 68, of 306 South Center, Long-view was married to Mrs. Leah H. Womack Stanley, age 57 June 2, 1958, according to Gregg County, Texas Marriage Book 32, page 260. Arlie Vernon Goyne and Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne gave a warranty deed to L. D. Miller to Lot 7, Block 1, Hollywood Park Addition November 1, 1960, according to Gregg County Deed Book 577, page 139.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, Kathleen Goyne Halamicek and Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. gave a warranty deed April 7, 1961 to Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne to the Hollywood Park property, according to Gregg County Deed Book 586, page 336.

Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne and her step-son Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. gave a warranty deed to Lot 1, Block 36 in Hamilton McNutt Addition September 22, 1972, according to Gregg County Deed Book 876, page 86.

Leah Womack Stanley Goyne was remarried to Earl Taylor Liv-erman July 23, 1975, according to Gregg County Marriage Book 45, page 431.

Kathleen Goyne, daughter of Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise Goyne, was born about 1920. She was married about 1941 to Dr. John F. Halamicek. In 1955 they lived in Wharton Coun-ty, Texas.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr, second child of Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise Goyne, was born September 4, 1921 in Longview, according to Gregg County Probate Birth Book 5, page 91.

The city directory of Austin, Texas showed him as a student at the University of Texas in 1941 and 1942 editions. He enlisted in the U. S. Army June 30, 1942 showing his civilian occupation as a student.

He served as a clerk typist in the 100th Machine Records Unit [mobile] from January 12, 1945 until February 18, 1946 he served in the western Pacific area. He was discharged February 24, 1946, according to Gregg County Discharge Book 6, page 185.

He was married January 25, 1947 to Minetta Altgelt in Austin, according to Travis County Marriage Book 48, page 256. In 1947 he was listed as a junior at the University of Texas living at 308 East 11th Street, according to the city directory. Later in 1947 Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne lived in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He probably was graduated from Louisiana State University there.

In 1952, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. was again listed as a student at the University of Texas by the Austin city directory. He and she both were listed as instructors at the University.

On July 22, 1957 they received a warranty deed to a lot in Briar-wood Addition, Arlington, Texas, according to Tarrant County, Texas Deed Book 3129, page 620. On May 2, 1961 Arlie Ver-non Goyne, Jr, and Minetta Altgelt “of Harris County, Texas” received a release from Prudential Insurance Company on the Briarwood Property in Arlington.

On February 14, 1964, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne, the daughter of Agnes A. Altgelt who was the daughter of Franz Correth and Minnie Correth, received an agreement from Great Northern Railway, according to Comal County, Texas Deed Book 137, page 247. The agreement was concerned with an undivided 1/9 interest in 56.5 acres of land that Minetta Altgelt Goyne had received as an inheritance. They lived in Tarrant County at that time. Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne gave a deed to the State of Texas April 27, 1967 to 25 acres of land for $19,800, according to Comal County Deed Book 155, page 154. This was in com-pensation for the land that she had inherited from her mother.

In 1968 Minetta Altgelt Goyne was listed as a teacher at Texas Christian University, living in Arlington, according to the Ft. Worth city directory.

In 1973 Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. a professor at University Of Texas at Arlington and Minetta Altgelt Goyne, an assistant professor at UTA, lived at 1205 Sherwood Drive, Arlington, according to the Arlington city directory.

Loy Alvah Goyne, son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born in Nashville, Arkansas in 1892. He was mar-ried about 1914 to Nannie Pearl Smitherman, who was born at Longview, Texas in 1893. One report states her place of birth as Kilgore, Texas.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne deeded 120 acres of land in Camp County, Texas to W. N. Morris No-vember 14, 1916, according to Camp County Deed Book 8, page 13. Later they deeded 120 acres to C. C. Houston October 17, 1917, according to Camp County Deed Book 7. page 136.

On December 8, 1917 Loy Alvah Goyne, a farmer, and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne received a deed from R. F. Johnston to 206 acres lying six miles west of Longview for $2,700, accord-ing to Gregg County Deed Book 95, page 636. He lived at Kil-gore, Texas.

In 1920 he was listed as a carpenter at Kilgore. Loy Alvah Goyne received a deed to 98.8 acres of land located 20 miles east of Tyler November 3, 1919 from Guy T. Moore for $3,250, according to Smith County Deed Book 161, page 310.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne desig-nated their homestead in Gregg County, Texas January 26, 1923, according to Smith County Deed Book 164, page 448. They sold their Smith County property to C. H. Irvin December 15, 1924 for $1,790, according to Smith County Deed Book 174, page 395.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne joined A. B. Spear and Winnie Spear June 8, 1931 in giving a quit claim deed to J. R. Watson to five acres in the Mary Van Winkle Survey, according to Gregg County Deed Book 111, page 388.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Edward Roger Goyne were two of the five trustees of Kilgore Baptist Church June 18, 1931 when they deeded Lots 6&7,. Block 153 in Kilgore to T. W. Lee, according to Gregg County Deed Book 97, page 58.

Loy Alvah Goyne “of Dallas County, Texas” received a quit claim deed to 1.08 acre of land September 14, 1934 from Mrs. Annie Laird and Roy H. Laird, according to Gregg County Deed Book 169, page 398.

Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne, a widow of Cass County, Tex-as, joined Edward Roger Goyne and Arlie Vernon Goyne of Gregg County, William Houston Goyne of Cass County, Mrs. Beatrice Williamson of Cass County and Mrs. Essie Borders, a widow of Gregg County in giving a warranty deed to a 14-acre tract in the Mary Van Winkle Survey in Gregg County to Wil-liam G. Morton June 19, 1962, according to Gregg County Deed Book 611, page 39.

Edward Roger Goyne, son of son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born about 1894. He was married to Edna Merle Ward about 1920, according to Gregg County Mar-riage Book 77, page 26. She was born in Texas in 1907.

They gave an oil & gas lease to William Benjamin Goyne March 10, 1931. The lease covered two and one-half lots in the Mary Van Winkle Survey in the city of Kilgore, according to Gregg County Deed Book 77, page 26.

Edward Roger Goyne and Edna Merle Ward Goyne gave a war-ranty deed to 2 1/2 acres to the First Baptist Church of Kilgore January 5, 1932 for $5,000, according to Gregg County Deed Book 118, page 588. He was one of the trustees of the church.

In 1933, he a groceryman lived in Kilgore.

They received a warranty deed from J. P. Williamson July 22, 1936 to Lots 8&9, Ludwig Addition, according to Gregg County Deed Book 198, page 506.5

Edward Roger Goyne died March 12, 1967 intestate. Edna Merle Ward Goyne received a conveyance of real estate shortly afterward from her children Edward Roger Goyne, Jr. and Joyce Ann Goyne Stanley and her husband James R. Stanley, according to Gregg County Deed Book 711, page 284.

Beatrice Goyne, daughter of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born 1897. She was married about 1918 to J. P. Williamson. In 1962 she lived in Cass County.

Essie Goyne, daughter of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born about 1900. He was married about 1920 to J. B. Borders. In 1962 she was described as a widow living in Gregg County.

I found a listing in “Good-speed’s 1890 Biography of Jackson County, Ar-kansas,” and listed under the Bleakley family was a tenant, Mrs. Nelson who’s dying request was that the family raise her children – Idel, Willie and Eva.”

Pleasant L. Goins was born about 1818 in Illinois, possibly in Edwards County. Only one other “Pleasant Goings” was recorded in Illinois in 1818.

“Pleasant Goings” made a land payment December 18, 1818, ac-cording to “Shawneetown Land District Records, 1814-1820” by Lowell M. Volkel. He paid $16 on account toward the pur-chase of 160 acres in Edwards County. He paid an additional $64 on his land contract February 5, 1819. In that year Jefferson County, Illinois was created from land in Edwards County, and Pleasant Goings found himself in the new county. Pleasant Go-ings appeared in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as the head of a family composed “of three white males over 21” and three other members of the fam-ily.

John Goings is believed to have accompanied Pleasant Goings to Edwards County. “John Going” appeared an adjacent loca-tion in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as a “white male, over 21 with three other persons in his family.

William Goings is believed to have accompanied Pleasant Go-ings in settling in Edwards County. He made a land payment of $80 December 4, 1817 on 160 acres of land, according to “Shawneetown Land District Records, 1814-1820.” He paid an additional $16 on the account October 7, 1818 and another $64 November 14, 1818.

“William Going, white male over 21,” appeared in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as the head of a household which contained seven other mem-bers of the family.

Another family which may have accompanied Pleasant L. Goins from Illinois to Arkansas is that of Robert Gibson and his wife, Elvira Gibson. Elvira Gibson may have been a sister or kinsman to Pleasant L. Goins. Some of his orphaned children were taken into the Gibson home after Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Smith Goins died.

Research of the early probate, deed and court records of Jeffer-son County might reveal a relationship between these individ-uals and Pleasant L. Goins of Lawrence County.

Pleasant L. Goins was married about 1844 to Mary M. Smith, according to Shirley A. Goings-Lindsey, a descendant. She was a native of Tennessee. They were living in Arkansas about 1845.

James Monroe Goings, son of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Goins, was born in Arkansas September 18, 1848, according to the research of Carson Goings, a great-grandson who lived in Hardy Arkansas in 1995. Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lind-sey shows his date of birth as April 2, 1848. He was married about 1874 to Rebecca Ann Huckabee who was born June 30, 1854. She died January 20, 1933, and he died August 16, 1934.

William Zachariah Goings, son of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Smith Goins, was born in Arkansas December 13, 1854.

William Zachariah Goings was arrested in July 1868 in Law-rence County at age 13 “for beating and bruising one Thomas J. Ball,” according to the research of Carson Goings.

Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lindsey wrote,

“Most of the Goings boys were big-boned and large for their age, and at 13, he would have appeared much older. I located Thomas J. Ball living with his family in the 1860 census of Lawrence County. This would make the two boys who were involved in the fight to have been aged 13 and 15 at that time. I found the court records where all charges against Zachariah Goings were dropped which specified that the county would pay all costs involved. The court evidently discovered that a 13-year-old boy had been arrested.”

William Zachariah Goings was married about 1874 to Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings who was born August 6, 1857 in Alabama to James T. Ballard and Frances Elizabeth Betts Bal-lard, according to Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lindsey. Anne Elizabeth Ballard had previously married George Goings, re-garded as a kinsman, March 13, 1872 in Lawrence County, Mis-sissippi.

William Zachariah Goings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Logan County, Arkansas:

In 1897, the family was living in Colorado County, Texas. From Columbus, Texas he wrote the Arkansas Land Com-mission in Little Rock requesting information on “donation land” in Arkansas and also available government and in Union County, Arkansas. In the later he stated, “I don’t like the cus-toms in Texas, being born in Arkansas and wanting to return home.”

William Zechariah was identified as a Methodist circuit rider.

William Zachariah Goings died August 6, 1899 while enroute to Arkansas from Texas in a wagon with his family. He and his son, James Monroe Goings, both died “of the fever” on the trip. The son died July 31, 1899.

Arthur Freeman, son of George Washington Freeman and Mary Isabelle Goings Freeman, was born in September 1895 in Arkansas. He and his mother accompanied Wil-liam Zachariah Goings when he removed to Texas. He appeared at age four in the 1900 census of Hunt County, Texas, living in the household of his grandmother, Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings. When he learned that Will Jordan was not his real father, he made trips back to Arkan-sas to get acquainted with his real rather. He stayed in the home of James Monroe Goings during these visits.

James Monroe Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born April 28, 1877 in Arkansas. He died at age 11, July 31, 1899 “of the fever” on a wagontrip from Texas to Arkansas.

John Lafayette Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born April 24, 1881. He was married about 1919 to Willie Mae Fulce in Goldwaithe, Texas. During World War II, John Lafayette Goings worked in a ship-yard in Orange, Texas. He returned to Dallas and his family about 1948 and died there in 1950.

Elijah Going, regarded as the son of William Goins and Annie Goins, was born about 1843, probably in Lawrence County. “Elijah Going, farm laborer” was enumerated in the 1860 cen-sus of Monroe County, Arkansas, living with a Wyman family according to the research of Jaymie Frederick, Foundation member of Scobey, Montana.

He enlisted at Pocahontas, Arkansas, in Randolph County, ad-jacent to Lawrence County for one year in Company A, Sev-enth Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He reported to Camp Shav-er there and was placed under the command of Capt. Cam-eron.

On July 26, 1861 his company muster roll shows him, “Ab-sent, unfit ever since enlistment with few days exception.” When his unit moved out, it was noted that Elijah Going as “Left at Pittman’s Ferry, Arkansas. He had not yet rejoined his unit on October 31. Another notation showed that he remain-ed in the hospital at Pittman’s Ferry “from September 25 to De-cember 25, 1861.”

After getting off to such a shakey start, Elijah Going turned out to be one of the most decorated soldiers in the Confederate Army. He was present for duty thereafter, and on June 30, 1862, it was noted that he was “Entitled to bounty.” Louise Goins Richardson, Goins researcher of Paragould, Arkansas turned up evidence to show the importance of this soldier to his regiment:

Pvt. Elijah Going, Company B, Sixth & Seventh Arkansas Infantry Regiment Consolidated was elected by his fellow infantrymen to receive the Confederate Medal of Honor and was considered by them as the outstanding infantryman of the consolidated regiment. The medal was awarded for valor displayed in the Battle of Chickamauga fought September 19-20, 1863 between the Federal Army of the Cumberland under Gen. Rosecrans and Bragg’s Confederate Army. The Confederates routed the Union Army in a decisive victory.

His name was published in the Roll of Honor that was read at a formation of every Confederate regiment in the service, in the first dress parade following receipt of the list by the regi-ment. This award was made in compliance with an act of Congress which bestowed such medals. This award was pub-lished at Richmond, Virginia August 10, 1864, according to War Department Reports, Series I, Volume 30, Part 2.

Elijah Going was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta on July 21, 1864. He was recuperating from his wounds at Camp Wright in Macon, Georgia in November and December, 1864.

Nancy Catherine Elizabeth Goynes Farrell Stuckey died March 7, 1924 at Alex, Oklahoma in Grady County.

He served as a military policeman in the 289th Infantry Battalion and showed a home address of Box 744, Hamilton, Texas. He was divorced when he entered the military. He was overseas from September 25, 1942 to October 4, 1945 and received four battle stars for participation in the battles of Rome-Arno, southern France, Rhineland and central Europe, He was discharged as a private first class October 14, 1945, according to Bosque County Discharge Book 3, page 287.

William Vernon Goains was married to Floy Vera Taylor May 27, 1942 in Hamilton County, Texas, according to Hamilton County Marriage Book 10, page 460. She was born in Texas in 1922.

Curtis Melvin Gowen had a brother named Charley Gowen who in 1994 lived at Garner, Arkansas and a sister Faye Gowen Morris who also lived at Garner in 1994. Curtis Melvin Gowen served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

The father of Ellis R. Williams of Lubbock, Texas stated that he was acquainted with the Gowens brothers in Stone County, Ar-kansas. The elder Mr. Williams stated that he was born in 1888 in Stone County and that he was personally acquainted with Rhoda C. Gowens and David Gowens. Andrew “Andy” Gowens was a chum of Mr. Williams in their childhood. Andrew Gow-ens later married a Miss Conditt, whose sister married a brother of Mr. Williams.

John Gowens, son of John Gowens and Catherine Gowens, was born 1846 in Arkansas. He appeared in the 1860 census of Stone County as a 13-year-old. Later John Gowens removed to Oklahoma, living in the vicinity of Byers, Lexington and Pur-cell.

Newton Jasper Gowens, son of John Gowens and Catherine Go-wens, was born about 1848 in Arkansas. He appeared as an 11-year-old in the 1860 census of Stone County. Alice “Allie” Gowens, daughter of Newton Jasper Gowens and Mary Mahulda “Hulda” Kemp Jeffery Gowens, was born in Arkansas about 1872. “Alice Gowen, 22 of Stone County” was married November 11, 1905 to Charlie Thomas, 23 of Hanover, Arkansas, according to Izard County marriage rec-ords. Her age should have been recorded as 32 instead of 22. She committed suicide during the 1930s, according to Rev. Hugh Gowens.

Siddie [Sida] Catherine “Cassie” Gowens, daughter of Newton Jasper Gowens and Mary Mahulda “Hulda” Kemp Jeffery Go-wens, was born in Arkansas February 6, 1873. She was mar-ried December 28, 1892 at age 18 to Daniel Mason Jeffery, Jr, 26, of Mt. Olive, Arkansas, according to Izard County, Ar-kansas marriage records. He was born November 10, 1866 and died in 1925. He was the son of Daniel Mason “Little Daniel” Jeffery, a Presbyterian minister and a farmer who was married May 2, 1844 to Nancy Lawrence. The senior Jeffery was born April 2, 1822 in Izard County and died April 1, 1888. He was buried in the Jeffery Family Cemetery by the White River in Izard County. Siddie Catherine “Cassie” Gow-ens Jeffery died November 10, 1928 and was buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Izard County.

Newton Owen Gowens, son of Newton Jasper Gowens was born at Mountain View in June 1878. He, “of Richwoods Township,” was married February 7, 1897 to Alberta “Bertie” Simpson, also 18, born August 10, 1879 to James H. Simpson and Mary Melvina Jane “Babe” Haley Simpson, according to Stone County marriage records.

He was married March 29, 1969 to Patsy Darlene Stinson, according to Nueces County Marriage Li-cense No. 88729. Paul Ray Gowens and Patsy Darlene Stin-son Gowens were students at West Texas State University in 1972 and 1973 and lived at 2500 8th Avenue, Canyon, Texas. In June 1980 Paul Ray Gowens, a professor at East Texas State University, and Patsy Darlene Stinson Gowens, lived at Commerce, Texas.

Ralph Edward Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1947. He was married to Genevieve Lynn Reed at Waco December 18, 1968, according to McLen-nan County, Texas Marriage Book 69, page 278. In 1969 Ralph Edward Gowens and Genevieve Lynn Reed Gowens lived at 209 Knickerbocker Street South, Corpus Christi. In June 1980 he was a school superintendent in Corpus Christi.

Apparently he was married about 1970. Larry B. Goin and Norma Goin received a warranty deed from Buckner Glenn Homes February 17, 1971 to a residence in Richland Hills, Texas, according to Tarrant County Deed Book 4997, page 940. Larry B. “Annette Gowen, 74, of Reyno, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Haven House in Atlanta, Ga. She was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Kewanee, Mo., a daughter of the late Floyd and Wilma [Skaggs] Carlock. She was an office worker at the Pocahontas City Clerk’s office, and was a member of the Old Reyno Free Will Baptist Church. Two husbands, Hubert McCullough and Phillip Gow-en, preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Kevin McCullough of Searcy and Jess McCullough of Ackworth, Georgia; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Old Reyno Free Will Baptist Church with Leo Martin officiating. Burial followed in Nelson Cemetery near Reyno, under direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Stanley and Chad Price, Danny, Jon-athan and Jim Edington and Royce Burkheart.”

“Funeral services for Daniel F. Gowen, 82-year-old resident of Gillham, Arkansas were held Saturday aft-ernoon at 2 o’clock at the Overturf Church, south of Grannis, Arkansas with Rev. Ben Allen officiating. Interment was in the Overturf Cemetery under the di-rection of the Geyer Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Charlie Kesterson, Bud Butler, Buck Morris, Sydney Cowan, Howard Reid and Robert Burns.

Mr.Gowen was born April 22,1869 at Lockesburg, Ar-kansas where he grew to manhood. He later moved to Gillham where he lived the remainder of his life, serv-ing the profession of a farmer. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Gowen Stone of Gillham and one niece, Mrs. H. E. Bounds of Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

Jane Gowen., lived in Sevier County in 1857, 1858 and 1859. She made a warranty deed to 80 acres for $80 to James Wilson March 30, 1857, according to Sevier County Deed Book I-6, page 101. On February 26, 1858 she made a warranty deed to John W. McHearse, and on March 19, 1859 she executed another legal instrument to him, according to Sevier County Deed Book K-7, page 228. It is suggested that she accompanied John W. McHearse in moving from Alabama to Arkansas about 1852.

McHarse” served as the officiating minister as the marriage of James M. Gowen and Dianah Wilson September 21, 1856, according to nearby Clark County Marriage Book C, page 418.

James Franklin Gowen enlisted October 18, 1861 in Company B, Nineteenth Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Later he served in the Twenty-fourth Arkansas Infantry Regiment in Sevier County, according to his Confederate pension application. He was injured in the arm, according to “Descendants of Matthew Rivers” by John Harvey Rivers.

“James F. Gowen, age 24,” was married to Sarah E. Rivers, age 19, on July 7, 1865 in Sevier County, according to Marriage Book 3, page 39. She was born December 27, 1846 in Morgan County, Alabama, the 11th child of Matthew Riley Rivers who was born in 1786 in South Carolina and Mary Prince Rivers who was born in South Carolina in 1805.

He was survived by sons, Alvie Goins and Odell Goins, both of Mountain View, Arkansas; stepson Jimmy Murphy, Bono, Arkansas; stepdaughters Dorothy Wicker of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas and Joann Henson of Paragould, Arkansas and a sister Shirley Goins Eastwood of Madisonville, Kentucky. He was buried in Flatwood Cemetery.

On August 15, 1933 William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen were the recipients of a quit claim deed to an Atoka city lot from their daughter, Bertha Gowen Biggs, et al.

In 1934 William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen were listed in the city directory of Wichita Falls, Texas living at 2808 Baltimore. He was shown as a farmer. From 1936 until 1946 they appeared in the directory living at 2906 Holliday. He was shown as a caretaker for Haven Park during that period. In 1945 she appeared as an employee of Roye Laundry. Afterwards the couple returned to Atoka where William Oscar Gowen died about 1947 at the age 69.

Bobbie James Gowen, son of Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie M. Gowen, was born at Byers, June 11, 1931, according to an interview with him January 9, 1961. He was married August 8, 1950 to Wandeen Ladd of Oklahoma. When contacted in 1961 Bobbie James Gowen advised that he was to be sent to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as a missionary by the Church of Christ of Buena Park, California. Following his tenure in Africa he returned to the United States and settled in Oregon near the residence of his uncle, Alvis Paul “Red” Gowen of Lebanon, Oregon. In January 1973 he continued to live in Oregon, according to Robbie Sikes of Westview Boys Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.

William Oscar Gowen, Jr, son of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born about 1918, probably in Atoka, Oklahoma. In 1936 he was shown living in the residence of his parent at 2906 Holliday, Wichita Falls, according to the city directory. He was listed a driver for Wichita Nursery.

William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was married about 1940, wife’s name Thelma, probably at Wichita Falls. In 1940 Thelma Gowen was shown as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone company, living at 2309 Holliday, according to the Wichita Falls city directory. In 1941 edition William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was shown as a stock clerk for N. O. Nelson Company, and Thelma Gowen continued as a telephone operator. Their residence was at 2210 Harvard Avenue.

It is believed that he went into military service about 1942. Thelma Gowen continued to live in Wichita Falls in 1943 and 1944. During that time she was employed by Woolworth Company as a stockwoman and lived at 601 Austin Street.

Later William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was remarried to Virginia Mary Dempsey, who was born in Wisconsin in 1924. In 1956 and 1957 they lived at 1621 Elizabeth Drive, Garland, Texas. In January 1961 they lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1957 Wil-liam Oscar Gowen, Jr. and Virginia Mary Dempsey Gowen again lived in Garland, at 1501 Lexington Drive, where he was foreman for R. B. McKee Company.

A Gowen Grocery was operated during the 1960’s in Garner, Arkansas in White County.

The sheriff of Ft. Bend County knew that John Steel Gowen was a member of an outlaw gang that roamed through the area in the turbulent days that followed the Civil War and sought an opportunity to arrest him. He had fled to Texas riding a horse stolen in Arkansas and with the knowledge that he had killed a man there. In a Fulshear saloon, he quickly joined up with the bush-whackers. While still in his teens, Gowen was labeled a horse-thief, a cattle rustler and a desperado. He lived the life of a nightrider with the lawless group for six years, robbing and stealing–and did it successfully, according to some. He was never caught.

Then came word from Arkansas that he was not a murderer, that the victim, his uncle, had survived and that he was not charged with any crime–either in Arkansas or in Texas! Just as quickly as he had turned to a life of crime, he became respectable and law-abiding. He moved to Houston, got a job with a large gro-cery concern and became a model member of the community, at the age of 21.

Mrs. M. Gowen was born in Arkansas in 1835, according to her enumeration in the 1860 census of White County. Apparently she was married about 1858, husband’s name unknown. In 1860 she appeared in Searcy, Arkansas living with her son at Kellum’s Hotel.

John Steel Gowen was born in a room in Kellum’s Hotel in Sear-cy, Arkansas in August 1859, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston. Having been abandoned by his father, they were enumerated there alone in the hotel in the 1860 census of White County:

They were the only members of the Gowen family to appear in White County in 1860. The father, name unknown, born in Ireland, was orphaned and worked as a cabinboy to pay for his passage to the United States, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston, Texas, however it is likely that this family legend applies to the father of John Steel Gowen. Faced with the responsibility of a new baby and a sickly wife, he “went west.” When his mother died, a reluctant uncle took John Steel Gowen in and loaded him with farm chores “to make a man out of him.”

At 15, in an argument with the overbearing uncle, Gowen struck him on the temple with a large rock and left him in a pool of blood. Convinced that he had killed his uncle instan-tly, he stole a horse from the lot and lit out for Texas, in his mind a fugitive from justice.

Arriving in Texas he fell in with a gang of desperadoes and lived the life of an outlaw near Fulshear, Texas for the next six years. At that time he learned that his uncle had survived the rock as-sault and came out of hiding. It became apparent that he could quit and start over with a second chance.

“John S. Gowen,” was listed in the 1881 city directory of Hou-ston as a salesman for J. A. McKee Company which advertised “drygoods, groceries and beer.” He became a model citizen and lived in a respectable part of town “on the west side of Brewster Street, two blocks north of Sewell Street.” He was married in 1883 to Mariah Jane Johnston, age 14, born in Texas in August 1869.

Mariah Jane Johnston was one of five children of William E. Johnston. His ancestors came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin and were members of Austin’s Old 300, according to the re-search of Betty Vaughn, a descendant of James Woodall John-ston, a brother of Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen.

In the 1889-1890 city directory John Steel Gowen was a repre-sentative of Browne & Bollfross, Grocers and lived at 30 Spruce Street. In 1891, John Steel Gowen went into business with Wil-liam F. Ludtke as “Ludtke & Gowen, Butchers, on the west side of Liberty Street between Chestnut & Chapman.” He owned a home “at the northeast corner of Donley & Gregg Streets.” In 1897, he removed his family to nearby Wharton County.

John Steel Gowen appeared as the head of the household in the 1900 census of Wharton County, Enumeration District 58, page 7, precinct 4:

In 1902 they lived at Halletsville, Texas. In 1913 they again lived in Houston. Until his death May 31, 1919 in Harris Count-y, John Steel Gowen was engaged in farming and stock-raising. Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen died October 12, 1926 and was buried at Eagle Lake, Texas.

Marie L. Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in October 1884. About 1904 she was married to Arthur Caylor, rice farmer and poultry farmer of Notawa, Texas. After the death of Arthur Caylor about 1940, Marie L. Gowen Caylor was remarried to Vance Readdick who died about 1960. Three children were born to the first union and none to the second. Marie L. Gowen Caylor Readdick died June 18, 1970, at the age 84, at the home of her daughter, Grace Caylor McElmurry at Eagle Lake, Texas.

Bessie Mae Weaver, daughter of Jasper Weaver and Mattie Gowen Weaver, was born about 1915. She was married twice and had a son and daughter. In January 1972 she was living at New Waverly, Texas.

John Linder Gowen, son of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in November 1890. He was married about 1907, wife’s name Dot. John Linder Gowen, appeared in the 1907 directory of Houston living at 1817 State Street. He was employed as a yardman by Houston Show Case Factory. In the 1910-1911 edition he was listed as a woodworker for Myers Spalti Manufacturing Company, living at 2710 Loraine. His household consisted of two people. He was accidently killed by his wife who shot him in the heart with a .22 calibre rifle as he lay in bed. His death is recorded in Harris County, death records on October 9, 1910.

In the 1911 and 1912 city directories of Houston Dot Gowen was listed as the night chief operator for Southwestern Tele-phone & Telegraph Company living at 1913 Moffitt. In 1915 Dot Gowen, “widow of John Gowen” was living at 2311 Jarrell, according to the city directory.

Glenn Atmar Gowen, only son of John Linder Gowen and Dot Gowen, was born December 21, 1908 in Harris County, accord-ing to BVS File 837464. He was married about 1930, wife’s name Leta B. Later the couple was divorced, and Glenn Atmar Gowen was remarried, wife’s name Maxine Gowen.

Leta B. Gowen in 1960 lived at 1419 Munger, Houston with Lo-retta Gowen, unidentified. In January 1972 Leta B. Gowen, a legal secretary lived at 1518 Lawson Street in Houston.

Glenn Atmar Gowen and Maxine Gowen lived at 927 Eastlake Street in Houston where he was employed as a salesman for Cargill Printing and Stationery in 1972.

John Edward Gowen was employed for many years by Sinclair Refining Company. In 1962 John Edward Gowen and Mary E. Gowen lived at 2110 Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, Texas. In 1972 they lived at 1207 Avenue J, Pasadena.

Irene Redding Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mar-ion Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in July 1899, probably at Hallettsville. She went to school at Wallis, Notawa and Hous-ton. About 1918 she was married to Ted Swindon. Two sons were born to this union. Later she married Fred Miller as her second husband, and no children were born to this union. She and her two husbands were deceased by January 1972.

Jesse Eugene Gowen, son of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born January 31, 1902 at Hallettsville in Lavaca County, according to BVS File No. 100730. He attend-ed schools at Wallis, Notawa and Houston. In 1913 his family moved to Houston.

On May 23, 1925, according to Madison County, Texas Mar-riage Book H, page 512 he was married to Essie Mae McGrew, who was born March 11, 1895 at Cushman, Arkansas. The couple was divorced in 1941. They were remarried December 5, 1952, according to Lamar County, Texas Marriage Book 48, page 572.

Jesse Eugene Gowen and his wife, “Mae Mayo Gowen,” con-tracted with Hubert Harold Yancy on July 30, 1956 for the pay-ment of $4,249.04, according to Lamar County, Texas Deed Book 344, page 555. On April 27, 1958 they made a deed to Horace F. Wharton, according to Deed Book 387, page 254.

In January 1972 Jesse Eugene Gowen and Essie Mae McGrew Gowen were living on a farm at Paris, Texas where they were visited by Arlee Claud Gowen January 7, 1972. No children were born to this union.

Florence Adella Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born May 5, 1905 at Hal-lettsville. About 1925 she was married to Fred Miller, half brother to Dee Pittman.
