FACTS:

Jesse Gowin or Goins moved to Drew County, Arkansas from Chester County, SC.  His records in Chester County, SC can be found on this site here:  https://goyengoinggowengoyneandgone.com/south-carolina-chester-county/

Researchers are unsure of Jesse Gowin’s parents… A clue may come from Union Co, SC – where a Vincent Going showed in the 1820 US Census.

Jason S Fish biography indicates he moved to Drew County, Arkansas in 1856 from Oktibbeha Co, MS:   “Janson S. Fish is one of Lincoln County’s leading citizens, and was born in Fairfield District, S. C., on august 23, 1826, being the son of Elias and Cynthia (McKance) Fish, native of New York and South Carolina, respectively. The father came from South Carolina, and after his marriage moved first to Georgia, and later to Alabama, then to Mississippi, back to Georgia, and finally to Texas about 1855, where he died. Janson spent his school days in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, and when twenty-one years old commenced farming for himself. he located in Arkansas in 1856, on the farm where he now resides. He entered 160 acres of land, and after clearing it thoroughly, began a system of improvement and cultivation that does great credit to his superior judgment. he has severed several terms as justice of the peace. During the late war he served in the Confederate army, and was dismissed at Marshall, Tex., May 5, 1865, after engaging in many of the chief battle and undergoing the hardships and deprivations necessary to a soldier’s life. January 20, 1848 he married Miss Ann Goings, daughter of Drew and Elizabeth Goings, and of its union were born eleven children, nine of whom are still living: Evelyn E., Charles A., John W., Samuel J., Eugene A., H. M., Mary J., Mattie Ann and Joseph E. Seven of the family belong to the Missionary Baptist Church, of which the father is a deacon. One of the boys, J. W. is a Baptist preacher.”  http://www.argenweb.net/lincoln/goodspeed.html#Janson%20S.%20Fish

Children born to Nathan Gowin and Louisa Gowin include:

Charles Albert Gowin born April 22, 1844
Mary “Polly” Gowin born about 1847

Charles Albert Gowin, son of Nathan Gowin and Louisa Gowin, was born in Tennessee April 22, 1844. He served as a Confederate infantryman during the Civil War, according to the research of a descendant, Quentin Walkup and his wife Ruby Gowin Walkup of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Taryn Gowin shows him as an aide to Gen. John Brown Gordon of Walker County, Georgia.

John Brown Gordon was born February 6, 1832 in Georgia. Though he was a lawyer with no military training before the Civil War, John Brown Gordon proved to be an excellent commander in battle. After recovering from five bullet wounds in the Battle of Sharpsburg, the native Georgian even looked the part of a fierce fighter, sporting a deep scar on the side of his face from one of his wounds.

Gordon was given command of a Georgian brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia and fought in the Battle of Chan-cellorsville and in the Battle of Gettysburg. At Gettysburg Gordon helped the wounded Union Gen. Francis Barlow, with whom he established a lifelong friendship.

As a brigadier general in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, Gordon planned and carried out a brilliant attack. According to an onlooker, “Driving on furiously, he struck back the Federal front . . . forced them off the field in utter rout. Brigade after brigade fled from the Federal works.”

Promoted to major general on May 14, 1864, Gordon led a division during the Battle of Spotsylvania. He was an active combatant until the end of the war, fighting in the Battle of Cold Harbor; in the Shenandoah Valley; outside Washing-ton, D. C, at Monocacy; at Winchester; at Fisher’s Hill; and at Cedar Creek.

He commanded the attack on Fort Stedman at Petersburg and led his men in the Battle of Appomattox in the last charge of the Army of Northern Virginia.

After the Confederacy surrendered, the distinguished general returned to Georgia, where he resumed his law practice in Atlanta. Elected a U.S. senator in 1873 and 1879, Gordon resigned in May 1880 to promote a railroad venture. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1886, and returned to the U.S. Senate from 1891 to 1897. In 1903 Gordon published an account of his Civil War service entitled “Reminiscences of the Civil War.” He was elected Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans in when the group was first organized and held the office until his death. He died in Miami, Florida January 9, 1904 at the age of 71 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.

Charles Albert Gowin was married about 1870 to Serena I. Evatt. They were enumerated in the 1870 census of Walker County, Georgia, according to the research of Taryn Gowin. He was present for duty thereafter, and on June 30, 1862, it was noted that he was “Entitled to bounty.” Louise Goins Richardson, Goins researcher of Paragould, Arkansas turned up evidence to show the importance of this soldier to his regiment:

Pvt. Elijah Going, Company B, Sixth & Seventh Arkansas Infantry Regiment Consolidated was elected by his fellow infantrymen to receive the Confederate Medal of Honor and was considered by them as the outstanding infantryman of the consolidated regiment. The medal was awarded for valor displayed in the Battle of Chickamauga fought September 19-20, 1863 between the Federal Army of the Cumberland under Gen. Rosecrans and Bragg’s Confederate Army. The Confederates routed the Union Army in a decisive victory.

His name was published in the Roll of Honor that was read at a formation of every Confederate regiment in the service, in the first dress parade following receipt of the list by the regi-ment. This award was made in compliance with an act of Congress which bestowed such medals. This award was pub-lished at Richmond, Virginia August 10, 1864, according to War Department Reports, Series I, Volume 30, Part 2.

The sheriff of Ft. Bend County knew that John Steel Gowen was a member of an outlaw gang that roamed through the area in the turbulent days that followed the Civil War and sought an opportunity to arrest him. He had fled to Texas riding a horse stolen in Arkansas and with the knowledge that he had killed a man there. In a Fulshear saloon, he quickly joined up with the bush-whackers. While still in his teens, Gowen was labeled a horse-thief, a cattle rustler and a desperado. He lived the life of a nightrider with the lawless group for six years, robbing and stealing–and did it successfully, according to some. He was never caught.

Then came word from Arkansas that he was not a murderer, that the victim, his uncle, had survived and that he was not charged with any crime–either in Arkansas or in Texas! Just as quickly as he had turned to a life of crime, he became respectable and law-abiding. He moved to Houston, got a job with a large gro-cery concern and became a model member of the community, at the age of 21.

Mrs. M. Gowen was born in Arkansas in 1835, according to her enumeration in the 1860 census of White County. Apparently she was married about 1858, husband’s name unknown. In 1860 she appeared in Searcy, Arkansas living with her son at Kellum’s Hotel.

John Steel Gowen was born in a room in Kellum’s Hotel in Sear-cy, Arkansas in August 1859, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston. Having been abandoned by his father, they were enumerated there alone in the hotel in the 1860 census of White County:

“Gowen, Mrs. M. 25, born in Arkansas, female
J. 1/12, born in Arkansas, male”

They were the only members of the Gowen family to appear in White County in 1860. The father, name unknown, born in Ireland, was orphaned and worked as a cabinboy to pay for his passage to the United States, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston, Texas, however it is likely that this family legend applies to the father of John Steel Gowen. Faced with the responsibility of a new baby and a sickly wife, he “went west.” When his mother died, a reluctant uncle took John Steel Gowen in and loaded him with farm chores “to make a man out of him.”

At 15, in an argument with the overbearing uncle, Gowen struck him on the temple with a large rock and left him in a pool of blood. Convinced that he had killed his uncle instan-tly, he stole a horse from the lot and lit out for Texas, in his mind a fugitive from justice.

Arriving in Texas he fell in with a gang of desperadoes and lived the life of an outlaw near Fulshear, Texas for the next six years. At that time he learned that his uncle had survived the rock as-sault and came out of hiding. It became apparent that he could quit and start over with a second chance.

“John S. Gowen,” was listed in the 1881 city directory of Hou-ston as a salesman for J. A. McKee Company which advertised “drygoods, groceries and beer.” He became a model citizen and lived in a respectable part of town “on the west side of Brewster Street, two blocks north of Sewell Street.” He was married in 1883 to Mariah Jane Johnston, age 14, born in Texas in August 1869.

Mariah Jane Johnston was one of five children of William E. Johnston. His ancestors came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin and were members of Austin’s Old 300, according to the re-search of Betty Vaughn, a descendant of James Woodall John-ston, a brother of Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen.

In the 1889-1890 city directory John Steel Gowen was a repre-sentative of Browne & Bollfross, Grocers and lived at 30 Spruce Street. In 1891, John Steel Gowen went into business with Wil-liam F. Ludtke as “Ludtke & Gowen, Butchers, on the west side of Liberty Street between Chestnut & Chapman.” He owned a home “at the northeast corner of Donley & Gregg Streets.” In 1897, he removed his family to nearby Wharton County.

John Steel Gowen appeared as the head of the household in the 1900 census of Wharton County, Enumeration District 58, page 7, precinct 4:

“Gowen, John 40, born in Arkansas in August 1859
Mariah 30, born in Texas in August 1869
Marie L. 15, born in Texas in October 1884
Mattie 13, born in Texas October 1886
John 9, born in Texas in November 1890
Ed 2, born in Texas in August 1897
Irene 10/12, born in Texas in July 1899”

In 1902 they lived at Halletsville, Texas. In 1913 they again lived in Houston. Until his death May 31, 1919 in Harris Count-y, John Steel Gowen was engaged in farming and stock-raising. Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen died October 12, 1926 and was buried at Eagle Lake, Texas.
