Elizabeth Gowen, who had relatives in St. Joseph, Missouri, was married to Alvin Trim January 8, 1861, according to Dou­glas County marriage records. They lived in Baldwin, Kansas.

Alice Viola Trim, daughter of Alvin Trim and Elizabeth Gowen Trim was born January 8, 1861 at Baldwin, Kansas. She was married January 8, 1879 to Wilson Crandall Sisson.

Of Wilson Crandall Sisson, David Sisson wrote:

“He received his early education in the public schools and entered Baker University, but did not finish the course there. For some years he was a farmer at Bald-win, and then was employed on construction work. Later he was a barber for nine years; and for fifteen years before his death he was a fruit grower with a large and successful business at Maysville.

Three children, Nathan Elmer Sisson, farmer, of Colony, Kansas; Lawrence Trim Clair Sisson, plumb-ing engineer, of Guernsey, Wyoming and Howard Roosevelt Sisson, of St. Joseph, Missouri survived him. A son, Hon. Arthur Franklin Sisson, mayor of Maysville, Missouri who was born September 23, 1890, was shot and killed at Maysville April 14, 1924.”

Alice Viola Trim Sisson died April 7, 1931 at St. Joseph, Mis-souri.

HARPER COUNTY, KANSAS

John W. Gowan was born about 1865, place and parents un­known. He was married about 1886, wife’s name Archie L. It is believed that they were residents of Harper County in 1909. They were residents of Kay County, Oklahoma in early 1922. Archie L. Gowan gave a warranty deed to G. W. Tarley July 8, 1922 to lots in Blackwell, Oklahoma, according to Kay County Deed Book 65, page 251.

John W. Gowans was a resident of Arkansas City, Kansas Au­gust 4, 1922 when he received a warranty deed from Cynthia A. Neil, a widow, to lots in Arkansas City for $2,150, according to Cowley County, Kansas Deed Book 135, page 188. John W. Gowan and Archie L. Gowan sold the property to Ode Mauk December 5, 1927 for $2,300, according to Cowley County Deed Book 151, page 244.

Archie L. Gowan received a warranty deed to lots in Arkansas City from her daughter, Leo Myrtle Gowan Rinehart June 19, 1928, according to Cowley County Deed Book 152, page 81.

John W. Gowan died March 11, 1929, according to an affi­davit made by Leo Myrtle Gowan Rinehart June 11, 1935 and recorded in Cowley County Probate Book 5, page 93.

Archie L. Gowan, Leo Myrtle Gowan Rinehart and her hus­band, George A. Rinehart, gave a deed to the State of Kansas for a half acre of land for highway right-of-way from the Northeast quarter of Section 35, Township 34 South, Range 3, July 12, 1930, according to Cowley County Deed Book 158, page 52.

Archie L. Gowan, Leo Myrtle Gowan Rinehart and George A. Rinehart gave a warranty deed to Kenneth Gowan May 14, 1935 to an undivided inherited interest in 41.49 acres of land, according to Cowley County Deed Book 166, page 130.

Archie L. Gowan received a warranty deed to property in Cowley County August 1, 1944 from Leo Myrtle Gowan Rine­hart, according to Cowley County Deed Book 185, page 590.

Earl W. Gowan, son of John W. Gowan and Archie L. Gowan was born in 1888, place unknown. In 1909 he listed his resi­dence at Anthony, Kansas on his marriage license application. He was married to Jennie L. Chappell at Arkansas City January 6, 1909, according to Cowley County Marriage Book V, page 12. Jennie L. Chappell was born in Nebraska in 1890, the daughter of Elmer Chappell.

Earl W. Gowan died before January 1921, according to Cowley County Probate Book 8, page 154. On February 16, 1922 Jennie L. Chappell Gowan was appointed guardian of their son, Kenneth Gowan, age 9. Kenneth Gowan had in­herited from his grandfather 1/6 interest in the NW/4 of the E/4 of Section 35, Township 34 South, Range 3, and 1/6 interest in lots in Gilstraps Addition, Arkansas City.

Jennie L. Chappell Gowan sold the property to her father-in-law, John W. Gowan for Kenneth Gowan March 21, 1922, ac­cording to Cowley County Deed Book 132, page 200 and Book 128, page 632.

Jennie L. Chappell Gowan was remarried to John M. Newton, age 45, June 23, 1922 at Arkansas City, according to Cowley County Marriage Book 14, page 47.

Jennie L. Chappell Gowan Newton received a warranty deed from Kenneth Gowan and his wife, Lucille Gowan to one-half interest in lots in Arkansas City, March 28, 1933, according to Cowley County Deed Book 166, page 66.

Kenneth Gowan, only child of Earl W. Gowan and Jennie L. Chappell Gowan, was born November 7, 1912 probably at Arkansas City. He was married about 1932, wife’s name Lu­cille. On March 28, 1933 Kenneth Gowan and Lucille Gowan transferred his interest in his mother’s homestead to her, ac­cording to Cowley County Deed Book 166, page 66.

On December 18, 1935 they sold his inherited interest in 41 acres of Cowley County farmland to Earl P. Kelley, according to Cowley County Deed Book 166, page 383. On May 21, 1941 they gave a warranty deed to E. D. Hollis to lots in Arkansas City, according to Cowley County Deed Book 175, page 523.

Leo Myrtle Gowan, daughter of John W. Gowan and Archie L. Gowan, was born in 1905. She was married Jan­uary 18, 1928 to George A. Rinehart, age 40, at Winfield, Kansas, according to Cowley County Marriage Book A-12, page 365.

George A. Rinehart and Leo Myrtle Gowan Rinehart reviewed a warranty deed from Charles E. Sills to lots in Arkansas City, according to Cowley County Deed Book 152, page 82. They transferred property to her mother on the same day. On May 14, 1935 they joined her mother in giving a warranty deed to an undivided 3/4 interest in 41 acres of land to Kenneth Gowan, according to Cowley County Deed Book 166, page 130. They transferred real estate to Archie L. Gowan August 1, 1944, ac­cording to Cowley County Deed Book 185, page 590.

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, KANSAS

Joseph Goens, age not noted, born in Illinois, was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1870 census of Leavenworth County, Alexandria township. Also enumerated in his family was a wife, name not noted and George D. Goens, age 13, re­garded as a brother of Joseph Goens.

Mariah/Naria Goins/Goens was the subject of an inquiry to the Foundation in June 1994 from Terry D. Wright, Piqua, Ohio, a great-grandson. He wrote that she was born November 4, 1856 in Illinois. She was married about 1875 to William Jennings Dial in Leavenworth Co. She died January 8, 1917. possibly in state hospital at Osowatomie, KS, and burial was in Leavenworth, KS. in Mt. Muncie Cemetery.

In 1870 census “Mariah Goins, 19” was shown as a house­keeper in the household of Mary Lempesley/Joseph Walter in High Prairie township in Leavenworth County. In 1900 and 1910 census returns Mariah Goins reported that her father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Ohio.

Her obituary was published in the “Leavenworth Times” January 9, 1917:

“Mrs. Miria Dial, 61 years old, wife of W. G. Dial, 112 N. Fifth Street, an employee of Goodjohn Sash & Door Company, died at 9:00 yesterday morning.at a local hospital. Death was caused by a general breakdown.

Mrs. Dial was well known in Leavenworth and has many friends who will regret to learn of her death. Be­sides the husband, one son Thomas of Eurie, Wisc. and one daughter, Miss Blanche of this city, survive her.

The body will be taken to the chapel of the J. C. Davis Undertaking Company, and the funeral service will be said at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. A. W. Atkinson of the Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be made in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery.”

Funeral home records state that Mariah Goins was “late of Os­owatomie,” suggesting that she died in the state hospital there, according to Jo Ann Bright Johnson Fuller of Tacoma, Wash­ington.

In the 1920 census of Leavenworth County, William Jennings Dial was enumerated living with his sister. Three children were born to William Jennings Dial and Mariah Goins Dial:

She was the eighth child of Jacob Vanderslice and Sarah Jane Jackson Vanderslice. She was born December 29, 1839 in Hamilton County, Indiana. Deborah Susan Vanderslice Goins was remarried January 4, 1864 in Lexington, Indiana to James Tobias Cline. She was married the third time to William Hurst. She died September 17, 1887 in Osawatomie County, Kansas. Children born to Micajah Goins and Deborah Susan Vanderslice Goins are unknown.

Joyce Elaine Goins was married July 4, 1947 at Green Forest, Arkansas to Paul Boatright. He died June 23, 1999 at Coffey-ville, Kansas. His obituary appeared in the June 24 edition of the “Coffeyville Journal:”

“Paul Boatright, 79, of Coffeyville, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Boatright was born March 2, 1920, in Berryville, Ark., to Burton Boat-right and Florence Walters Boat-right. He grew up in Berryville, and was graduated in 1940 from Berryville High School. Mr. Boatright re-tired Jan. 2, 1981, from Farmland Industries, where he had been employed nearly 21 years. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Boatright; one son, Dale of Springdale, Arkansas; and two daughters, Linda Dunn of Topeka, Lori Wells of Pawhuska.”

From 1961 to 1965 he operated Gowen Auto Parts located at 815 Santa Fe. In the 1965 edition his address was given as Route One, and his wife’s name was Jean Gowen. In 1967 Amyas E. Gowen, a salesman for Hargrove Auto Supply and Jean Gowen continued on Route One, according to the city directory. In 1963 Leona M. Gowen was listed as a cook for Dalfritz Grill living at 507 Roosevelt in Coffeyville.

Gowen and another as Doris M. Gowen. Her husband, Clement Gowen in 1959 was shown as a maintenanceman for Ozark Smelting and Minning Company. The couple lived at 912 West 6th Street from 1959 to 1967. In 1965 he was employed by Sherwin-Williams Paint Company.

Joyce Elaine Goins was married July 4, 1947 at Green Forest, Arkansas to Paul Boatright. He died June 23, 1999 at Coffey-ville, Kansas. His obituary appeared in the June 24 edition of the “Coffeyville Journal:”

“Paul Boatright, 79, of Coffeyville, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Boatright was born March 2, 1920, in Berryville, Ark., to Burton Boat-right and Florence Walters Boat-right. He grew up in Berryville, and was graduated in 1940 from Berryville High School. Mr. Boatright re-tired Jan. 2, 1981, from Farmland Industries, where he had been employed nearly 21 years. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Boatright; one son, Dale of Springdale, Arkansas; and two daughters, Linda Dunn of Topeka, Lori Wells of Pawhuska.”

From 1961 to 1965 he operated Gowen Auto Parts located at 815 Santa Fe. In the 1965 edition his address was given as Route One, and his wife’s name was Jean Gowen. In 1967 Amyas E. Gowen, a salesman for Hargrove Auto Supply and Jean Gowen continued on Route One, according to the city directory. In 1963 Leona M. Gowen was listed as a cook for Dalfritz Grill living at 507 Roosevelt in Coffeyville.

Mrs. Doris Gowen was listed in the 1967 directory of Cof­feyville as secretary of the board of education living at 912 West 6th Street. In one edition she was listed as Doris D. Gowen and another as Doris M. Gowen. Her husband, Clement Gowen in 1959 was shown as a maintenanceman for Ozark Smelting and Minning Company. The couple lived at 912 West 6th Street from 1959 to 1967. In 1965 he was employed by Sherwin-Williams Paint Company.

Richard Going was born in Mississippi about 1835, according to his enumeration in the 1875 state census of Riley County. He was enumerated as the head of Household No. 24, Family No. 24. He was 40, black, laborer owing $100 of property in Manhattan City, Kansas.

Keely Denning wrote March 24, 2001:

“I am the researcher for the Saline County Kansas Sheriff’s Department, I am currently researching all our former Sheriff’s in a attempt to locate decendants so that the de-partment can locate a photo of the former Sheriff and give our men who served our county the honor and recognition for their service.

Thomas J. Going came to Saline County March of 1866 with his wife Sarah. He was Sheriff here from 1872 to 1875. His oldest son, George Going was killed in 1872. His second son James Going was married to Georgia Elgin Goodwin January. 1, 1884. A daughter, Bessie Going, was born to them in 1885, and a son Thomas Going who died in 1890 at the age of two. In 1888 Thomas Going , the former sheriff moved to Kan-sas City.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY, KANSAS

Howard R. Goin, who was born about 1933, place and parents unknown, is presumed to have died in a dust explosion June 6, 1998 at DeBruce Elevator in Haysville, Kansas. His body was never recovered. Six other men died in the explosion. A memorial service attended by 600 mourners was held for Goin Saturday, June 20 in the Haysville High School auditorium by Wichita Police Chaplin Stephen Edwards.

Goin was survived by his wife, Dorothy Goin of Haysville; son Robert Goin, Belle Plaine, Kansas; son Wendell Goin of Haysville; daughter Susan Goin Lennherr, Haysville; daughter Deborah Goin, Wichita; brother Carl Goin of Fullerton, California; Joe Goin of Santa Maria Rancho, California; brother Bob Goin, Mount Ida, Arkansas and sister, Evelyn Goin McDonald of Poteau, Oklahoma.

A memorial was established for Howard R. Goin at Haysville, Library.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KANSAS

John W. Goings was born about 1866, place and parents unknown. About 1896 he moved to Wyandotte County. Some time prior to this date he was married, wife’s name Flona M. No children were born to this couple.

On November 29, 1909 John W. received a warranty deed to 80 acres of land in Hemphill County, Texas from S. H. & Grace Simmons of Woodward, Oklahoma, according to Hemphill County Deed Book 17, page 490.

John W. Goins wrote his will at Kansas City, Kansas January 22, 1938. He died April 10, 1940, age 72 and Flona M. Goings, the only heir was appointed executrix, according to Hemphill County Deed Book 73, page 358. The estate consisted of 80 acres in Hemphill County, a farm in Cherokee County, Kansas, property in Wyandotte County and $1,388.76 of common stock in Victory State Bank, Swift International; Swift & Company and Libby McNeill & Libby. Record of the administration was published in the “Kansas City Weekly Press,” in May 1941. The will was filed for probate April 30, 1941.

Flona M. Goings continued to live at 245 North 17th Street, Kansas City until her death November 27, 1947. At her death her estate valued at $12,681.76 was divided among her brother and sister and the brother and sister of John W. Goings.
