Hugh Goen was born in 1824 in South Carolina, according to his census enumeration in 1880. It is believed that he was married about 1847, wife’s name Jane Maria. Jane Maria Goen was born September 20, 1828, probably in Alabama. They lived in Alabama in 1861 and 1865. Jane Maria Goen died December 12, 1876, and was buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Brazos County, according to “Brazos County, Texas Cemetery Inscriptions.”

Hugh Goen appeared as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Brazos County, Enumeration 18, page 30. The household was rendered as:

Maggie Goen, daughter of Hugh Goen and Jane Maria Goen, was born in 1848 in Georgia. She was married about 1870, husband’s name Alecorn. She appeared in the 1880 census of her father’s household in Brazos County as a 32-year-old mother.

William R. Goen, son of Hugh Goen and Jane Maria Goen, was born in Alabama in November 1858. It is believed that he was married about 1880, wife’s name Lula. Lula Goen was born December 11, 1860. She died April 9, 1884 and was buried in Old Bethel Cemetery in Brazos County. William R. Goen was remarried about 1887, wife’s name, Nancy A. Nancy A. Goen was born in February 1863 in Texas.

William R. Goen was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 census of Brazos County, Enumeration District 3, page 7:

Missouri Ann Goen died August 27, 1925 and was buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Brazos County. Jefferson Davis Goen died August 22, 1926 in Brazos County, and was buried be­side his wife.

Eva Goen, daughter of Jefferson Davis Goen and Missouri Ann Goen, was born August 6, 1881 in Texas, probably Bra­zos County. She appeared in the 1900 census of her father’s household as an 18-year-old. She died August 13, 1900 and was buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Brazos County.

Drala Goen, daughter of Jefferson Davis Goen and Missouri Ann Goen, was born in Texas in August 1881. She appeared in her father’s household as a 15-year-old in the 1900 census of Brazos County.

Essie V. Goen, daughter of Jefferson Davis Goen and Mis­souri Ann Goen, was born in March 1887 in Texas, probably Brazos County. She appeared as a 13-year-old in the 1900 census of her father’s household.

William Hugh Goen, son of Jefferson Davis Goen and Mis­souri Ann Goen was born July 1, 1892 in Brazos County. He appeared in the 1900 census of his father’s household as a 7-year-old.

From 1916 through 1920 he was employed by the Texas Company at Port Arthur, Texas, living at 1200 5th Street, ac­cording to the 1916 Port Arthur city directory. In 1920 he was listed as a clerk for the Texas Company.

William Hugh Goen received a deed to a residence in Port Arthur May 29, 1919. The property was purchased for $450, according to Jefferson County, Texas Deed Book 186, page 265.

William Hugh Goen and his wife, Evelyn Goen sold the prop­erty March 24, 1921 for $750, according to Jefferson County Deed Book 205, page 52.

William Hugh Goen died in El Paso County, Texas July 25, 1954, according to BVS File 31807. He was buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Brazos County. His tombstone is marked with a Woodman of the World insignia. Children born to William Hugh Goen and Evelyn Goen are unknown.

Anna L. Goen, daughter of Jefferson Davis Goen and Mis­souri Ann Goen, was born in Brazos County in June 1895. She appeared in the 1900 census of her father’s household as a four-year-old.

Ira Lester Goen, son of Jefferson Davis Goen and Missouri Ann Goen, was born in Brazos County March 20, 1900, ac­cording to BVS File 472290. He was an employee of the Texas Company at Port Arthur in 1920, according to the Port Arthur directory.

He was married to Edia Marie LaBlanc in Jefferson County, Texas in 1926, according to Jefferson County Marriage Book 29, page 453.

Ira Lester Goen, an auto mechanic for Smith-May Motor Company, and Edia Marie LaBlanc Goen, lived at 609 7th Street, Port Arthur, according to the 1927 city directory. In 1929 he was the garage foreman for Gulf States Utilities Company and lived at 1517 Memphis in Port Arthur.

Ida Goen, daughter of Hugh Goen and Jane Maria Goen, was born August 10, 1865 in Alabama. She was enumerated in the 1880 census of Brazos County as a 13-year-old living in her father’s household. She died October 20, 1901, according to her tombstone in Old Bethel Cemetery.

Charles S. Goen, son of Hugh Goen and Jane Maria Goen, was born in September 1868 in Alabama, according to his enumeration in the 1900 census. He appeared in the 1880 census of Brazos County living in his father’s household as a 12-year-old. He was married about 1892, probably in Brazos County, wife’s name Ellen.

He was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1900 census of Brazos County, Enumeration District 3, page 1. The family was rendered as:

Clarence Curtis Goen, son of Charles S. Goen and Ellen Goen, was born in July 1893, according to his enumeration in the 1900 census of Brazos County. He was shown as a six-year-old in the household of his parents. He was married to Velma Irene Stone April 18, 1910. They were the parents of a daughter who was born June 26, 1911, according to Johnson County, Texas Birth Book A, page 12. The record of this birth was amended in Johnson County Birth Book 1, page 185. Clarence Curtis Goen and Velma Irene Stone Goen were the parents of an infant that died January 29, 1922 in Hays County, Texas, according to BVS File 1886.

On December 22, 1922 they were deeded lots in Baylor Ad­dition of Waco, Texas, according to McLennan County, Texas Deed Book 353, page 49. They traded property in Waco October 3, 1923, according to McLennan County Deed Book 385.

Clarence Curtis Goen and Velma Irene Stone Goen appeared in the 1923-24 city directory of Waco living at 1617 South 15th Street. He was listed as a clerk at that time. They were also the parents of a son born in San Marcos, Texas July 4, 1924, according to BVS File 44182.

Clarence Curtis Goen, manager of Covert Auto Company, Austin, Texas, and Velma Irene Stone Goen, lived at 603 West 37th Street, according to the 1932-33 city directory of Austin. He continued in that capacity through 1957. In the 1935 and 1937 issues of the city directory their address was shown as 615 West 37th Street. In 1940 they lived at 1215 West 9th Street. In 1940 the address was 3302 Windsor. One child lived in the household in the 1940, 1941 and 1942 cen­sus. Clarence Curtis Goen received a deed August 12, 1939 to a lot in Austin, according to Travis County, Texas Deed Book 622, page 549. In the 1944-45 editions of the Austin city directory they appeared at 3302 Windsor. On September 22, 1947, while a resident of Travis County, Clarence Curtis Goen gave an affidavit concerning the children of Clarence Covert, according to Crockett County, Texas Deed Book 91, page 401. In 1947 Velma Irene Stone Goen was listed in the Austin City directory as a clerk at State Highway Depart­ment. She continued in that capacity in each edition through 1957.

Clarence Curtis Goen died September 26, 1961 at age 68 in Travis County, according to BVS File 54878. He left an es­tate valued at $22,396.23, according to Travis County Probate File 22975.

Velma Irene Stone Goen was remarried in 1969 to William Joel Ferguson, according to Travis County Marriage Book 85, page 593.

Clarence Curtis Goen, Jr, son of Clarence Curtis Goen and Velma Irene Stone Goen, was born July 4, 1914 at San Marcos, Texas, according to BVS File 44182. He was listed as a student at the University of Texas in the Austin City directory of 1941, 1942, 1944-45, living at the home of his parents at 3302 Windsor.

He received a B.S. degree from the University in 1944. He was married August 19, 1944 to Betty Ruth Presnell, accord­ing to Travis County Marriage Book 44, page 208. Clarence Curtis Goen, Jr. attended the University of Indiana in 1945. He was an electronics engineer with RCA Victor at Bloom­ington, Indiana from 1944 to 1947. He was an associate min­ister at Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin in 1947 and 1948. He was ordained to the ministry in the Baptist church in 1948.

Clarence Curtis Goen, Jr. and Betty Ruth Presnell Goen lived at 1922 Spurgeon, Ft. Worth, according to the 1950, 1951 and 1952 city directories. He was listed as a student. He preached at Allen, Texas from 1951 to 1955. During that tenure he received a B.D. degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth in 1953. He preached at Ada, Oklahoma from 1955 to 1957. He received a Th.D. de­gree in 1956. In 1957 he received a B.A. degree at Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas. He received an M.A. degree at Yale University in 1958.

He was a research assistant at Yale University from 1959 to 1960. He received a Ph.D. degree at Yale University in 1960. He was a visiting professor of church history at Wesley The­ological Seminary in Washington, D. C. in 1960. He was a visiting professor of church history at the School of Theol­ogy at Clairemont, California in 1971. He was a professor of U.S. History at American University, Washington, D. C. from 1971 to 1973. He served as a professor of the history of Christianity until 1989. He received the Frank and Elizabeth Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History for his book, “Revivalism and Separatism in New England, 1740-1800.” In 1972 he wrote “The Great Awakening.” At that time he lived at 4507 Verplanck Place, NW, Wash­ington, D. C.

He died of cancer December 26, 1990, survived by his wife and three sons.

Daniel William Gowen, Jr. was born in Brazos County May 9, 1948, according to BVS File 52085.

Samuel Charles Gowen was born in Alabama in January 1838, according to his 1900 census enumeration. He came to Texas in 1855. During the Civil War he served in Company H, 22nd Texas Infantry Regiment. His Confederate pension mentioned that his disabilities, “throat trouble and dislocation of shoulder” were service connected. He served about four years in the Confederate service. He moved to Bryan, Texas March 1, 1899. On August 1, 1899 he reported that he owned only a horse and wagon which he valued at $65. His pension application, No. 05965 was approved.

He appeared as the head of a household in the 1900 census of Grimes County, Texas, Enumeration District 19, page 19. His family was listed as:

“Gowan, Samuel C. 62, born in AL in January 1838
Annie E. 47, born in TX in August 1852”

He died January 1, 1911 in Grimes County. Annie E. Gowen died January 30, 1923 in Brazos County, according to BVS records.

    A child of Jefferson Davis Goen and Missouri Ann Wyatt Goen listed as Anna L. Goen was actually LaVada Anna Goen who married James Elmo Weedon. She was my grandmother. She is buried at Old Bethel Cemetery in Brazos County, Texas along with other members of the Goen family.
