Joseph Chisholm appeared before me, John O’Connor …of said division …. month of the past April … was in the employ of Mrssrs Cochran and Rhea working at ginning cotton … in their cotton mill … before mid-day he saw some negroes belonging to Frederick Kimball Jr with a Spaniard named Francisco working on a piece of ground recently cleared also belonging to the said Kimball and they lighted several large fires about 30 yards from the said mill and buildings with a very strong wind blowing from the fire toward the mill. … deponent was at the store getting some twine to bale cotton; he was working with a man named Bernardo Creator and a negro named Thomas. … was returned from store … about 100 yards distant from the mill, when he saw the said mill on fire, and he began to run to the mill to save it, but as the flames were violent he could only with the assist of the afsd and that of William Brent, save one bale of cotton … he did not see the said Frederick Kimball on the cleared ground that morning… he is 22 years old.
