1760 Absalom Chisum b. abt 1760 of Halifax Co, Va and Logan Co, KY m. Edith

Absalom Chisum b. Dec 25, 1760 – d. Feb. 3, 1843 of Halifax Co, Va and Logan Co, KY m. Edith (MNU)

Parents:

Children: (Absolom appears to have children based on the 1840 US Census – and based on some of the names appearing next to his in the early tax records in Warren County, Kentucky.  He joins the Skakers some time in the early 1800s and appears to have moved onto their facility at South Union, Logan County, Kentucky – the US Census records lump the whole town into one return.  Likely there are records at the South Union Museum in Logan County Kentucky regarding any family he may have had).

FACTS and SOURCES:

Information from the Shakers – the church Absalom Chisum belonged to:

1760 Dec 25 – Feb 3, 1843 – Absolom Chisholm. Came from Maryland in early times; became a very important believer, without the help of any kinfolks; a good stockman; (raised up two orphans, Panina & Kitturia Harrison). South Union Graveyard Book. pg. 3. United Society of Believers (Shakers). Logan County, Kentucky.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C33S-QQVS-4?i=441&cat=358499  (NOTE: Absalom Chisum was actually born in Virginia – likely Halifax County, Virginia.  He joined the “Shakers”, a religious group in Logan County, Kentucky, and this is the information given on their books. He had a fallout with his family (specifically with his brother John) over a land grant Absalom appeared to believe was stolen from him – so its possible he was trying to distance himself from his family due to hard feelings and claimed he was from Maryland – not from that other group of Chisums).

Also in the Shakers records is Betsy Estes (this appears to be his sister Elizabeth Chisum who married John Estes) her info is here:

1765 – March 1, 1810. Betsy Estes. Born in Maryland in 1765. Died March 1, 1810. Age 55 years. South Union Graveyard Book. pg. 12. United Society of Believers (Shakers). Logan County, Kentucky.

His brother-in-law William Patillo who married his sister Sarah Chisum is also listed in the Shakers Graveyard Book.

1768 Apr 2 – 1850 May – William Patillow. Born in the State of North Carolina, in the year 1768, April 2, Died, in May 1850. Age 82 years.
South Union, Ky. Necropolis. A List of the Names of the Brethren & Sisters, Who have died, in the Society, Since the Year 1810. Shakers. p. 53 (p. 4).

1797 Oct 31 – 1805 May 25 – Absolem Chisom complainant v. Jonathan Hampson & Andrew Hampton, heirs at law of Adam Hampson decd, and James Karr, William Karr, Robert Karr & John Karr, heirs at law of Robert Karr decd, and Jacob McCarty, Defendants } Original Bill in Equity.
… on the 31 day of October 1797 Absolem Chisom exhibited into this honorable court his bill of complaint against Jonathan Hampton & Robert Hampton heirs at law of Adam Hampton decd, James Karr, William Karr, Robert Karr & John Karr heirs of Robert Karr decd, & Jacob McCarty defendants …
…. humbly complaining sheweth unto your honors, your orator Absolem Chisom that under the law of No. Carolina he became entitled to a preemption of 640 acres of land in the District afsd for which he obtained the commissioners certificate and authorized his brother John Chisom to make entry therof which he accordingly did by making an entry in the office for receiving entries of preemptions in the following words and figures viz: “February the 16th 1784 Absolem Chisom enters a preemption of 640 of land lying on the South side of Richland Creek a branch of Red River beginning about 1/2 a mile above the spring about 4 miles below the war trace runing from thence down the creek as the law directs to include the spring and improvements marked I C for compliment”.
And your orator sheweth that his improvement was made at the spring called for in his lolcation and also that the said Richland Creek is the same that is otherwise known by the name of Sulphur Fork
And your orator further sheweth that being absent from this County during several years a report was circulated of his being dead which his said brother either gave credit to and conceived himself entitled to your orators said preemption as heir at law or from some other motive went under pretence of having an order from your orator to the office and then made the following transfer of the said entry viz: “March 9 1785 transferred by order of Absolem Chisolm to John Chisom and by said John Chisom to Adam Hampton“.
Your orator further shewth that said Hamptson (who is since dead) gave said John a negro and his bond for the payment of 20 pounds in money for the said preemption so wrongfully transferred to him as aforesaid. But that some time afterwards on your orator returning to this country and claiming his said land a compromise took place in respect thereof by which said John agreed to give said Hampton 200 acrs of land as an inducement for him to relinquish his claim to said preemption and agreed also to return the negro he had received for it and give up the aforesaid bond to said Hampto to be cancelled all which was accordingly done and the said Hampton in consideration therof relinquished to your orator all his right and claim to said Preemption and promised to recovery the same to him.
And also your orator sheweth that after said Hampton had received the transfer of said Preemption in the manner above stated and before said compromise took place he had caused sd land to be surveyed and a return thereof to be made to the secretary’s office in his own name on which a grant hath since issued in his name and such title was thereby vested in him at his death descended to Jonathan Hampton and Andrew Hampton sons and heirs at law of the said Adam decd who are yet seized thereof, no conveyance having ever been made to your orator of said land either by the said Adam in his lifetime or by said heirs after his decease.
And your orator is informed and believes the patent for his said land is in possession of the said heirs and that the said heirs are yet under age.
And your orator further expressly charges that his said brother took on himself to sell and transfer the said preemption without any land of order or authority from your orator for so doing and that he never in any wise ratified or agreed to the same … (This case goes on from page 301 to page 314 with several different claims and defenses … the defendants claimed that the agreement was never signed by Adam Hampton, and that too much time had passed – claiming a defense of Statute of Limitations. Eventually, in 1805 the court agreed with the Defendants and dismissed the case).

NOTE: The following are transcripts of affidavits filed on behalf of some of the Roberts family who were applying to the Cherokee Nation. Their application was denied, but the details of the affidavits help show where it appears that Absalom Chisholm Jr went after leaving Kentucky, and who and where other family members of Absalom Chisholm may have been.

Absalom Chisholm Sr of this page appeared to have freed his slaves in 1830 (when he was about 70 yrs old) – for religious and moral reasons. This would have been a large part of the value of his estate. His children likely lost much of the value of their father’s estate.  This is assuming he had children.  His 1840 US Census shows 6 white females and 7 white males in his household. So it does appear he had a large family.  Based on the affidavits below, Absalom Chisholm Jr and William Chisholm had already left home and appear to have headed to Georgia some time in the late 1820s or early 1830s.

Chisholm Family – Cherokee Nation Application of W T Roberts, etal (application denied)
1887 Oct 11 – Statement of B W Allenty … resident of Tahlequah Cherokee Nation and 58 years old.
… met Dave and William Chisholm near Belview Texas and they lived there … was introduced to them as being Cherokees by George Harnage and also by William Harnage … that is as far as I know about them. Said they were relations of Old Tom Chisholm of the Cherokee Nation. Harnage told me they were relatives of Old Tom Chisholm.
This was in the year of 1852 or 53. I would judge Dave Chisholm to be about 45 years old and William I think was the younger of the two. William and Dave Chisholm both had family then were more of William Chisholm family … I rembember of the oldest of Dave Chisholm children was a boy and judge him to being 20 years old in the year 1854. I think they were living near Belview … no knowledge of the ancestors of David and William Chisholm.
(Mentioned: Old Tom Chisholm. Dave Chisholm (abt 45 yrs old in 1852) and William Chisholm (younger than Dave) were relations. Dave Chisholm had a 20 year old son in 1852).
………….
1887 Oct 11 … 2d Witness – John Ratling Ground – I am a resident of Tahlequah District Cherokee Nation and about 65 years old.
I was acquanted with Absalom Chisholm and William Chisholm, they lived low down in Georgia this was about the time the Cherokee came to this country. They were among the first who left that country and came west. They were Cherokees by blood is at least was look upon as such. I first saw Absalom and William Chisholm at a Council on the Fork called by John Ross in regard to the division of some money these parties voted to not divide the money.
They looked like Cherokees and appeared to be half or 3/4. I saw William Tinsley several times. I understand he married into the Chisholm family.
… I think we lived in Tennessee about 5 or 6 years before we came to this country . The Council … was in the Fork of the Oostanahla and Etowah Rivers near where John Ross lived at that time…
I do not know what relation Finney Chisholm was to the Chisholms referred to.
William and Absalom Chisholm were I suppose about 40 years old when I saw them back in Georgia. I did not know anything about their family.
William and Absalom Chisholm should appear on the old settler rolls.
(Mentioned: Absalom Chisholm and William Chisholm (both abt 40 yrs old back in Georgia before they left) – looked to be 1/2 to 3/4 Cherokee. Unknown what relation Finney Chisholm is to these Chisholms)
……………………….
1887 Oct 11 – Statement of Mary Ann Roberts … I am a resident of Decatur Texas, Wise County and about 70 or 75 years old and acquainted with the applicant Lovena Levy and she is a Cherokee by blood from her father and he from his mother Joana Tinsley and she from her mother who was a sister to Absolam and William Chisholm and their names should appear on the old settler rolls West of the Mississippi River.
I saw Absolam and William Chisholm in the State of Tennessee and Kentucky. They were known and recognized in the community where they lived as Cherokees. The applicant is the daughter of witness. When I married the applicant father I was aware that he was a Cherokee.
I was partly raised in Georgia and partly in Tennessee. I lived near Augusta Georgia when I left Tennessee for Missouri. I was about 14 years old. And some years afterwards I went back to Tennessee and on my return I married my first husband in the State of Missouri who was a white man by the name of Pitman. I had two children by that marriage both daughters. I married my second husband Eli Roberts in the State of Missouri about 35 or 40 years ago and have by that marriage 5 living, 3 boys and 2 girls named as follows: William Tinsley (son), Manerva (daughter), Francis (son), Lovena (daughter), and Moses (son). The applicant is about 34 years old. She is married and her husband is named John Levy a white man. The applicant has no children by this marriage and was married previous to her marriage with Levy to a white man by the name of Granger Salmon and they had 2 children by that marriage and both children are dead. Granger Solman had no children previous to his marriage with Lovena, Levy had no family previous to his marriage with applicant.
I have a fine recollection that the father of William and Absolam Chisholm name was Jake Chisholm. I think William and Absolam Chisholm were born in the State of Georgia. They were medium height men and their complexion was rather dark.
… the applicant Lovena Levy is the great grand daughter of the Sister of William and Absolum Chisholm. The Cherokee neverlived in the section of Georgia where I lived and I never lived in the Nation either before or after I was married. Eli Roberts never participated in the payment made to the Cherokees and dont know that and Census was ever taken by any enrolling agent. Signed: Mary Ann Roberts.
(Mentioned: Absolam and William Chisholm had sister – left Augusta Georgia area in 1830s).
……………………………
1889 April 16 – Statement of William Wilson … I am 78 years of age in October. I live in Sequorah District Cherokee Nation. I claim to be a quarter Cherokee my father was a white man, Jim Chisholm the oldest of the Chisholm I ever knew lived back in the Cherokee Nation on the Georgia side. As to his family I dont know anything about if he had any children. I never knew them.
Chisholm was a white man and said to be a brother of John D Chisholm who was also a white man. I never saw John D Chisholm, only knew him from charactor. I knew Tom Chisholm who was a son of Old John D Chisholm who died in the Cherokee Nation near Maysville in 1834.
When I came to this country and he was a part Cherokee there was another George Chisholm part Creek who died near Maysville. I think he was a son of John D Chisholm.
I knew Ignatius Chisholm only by what I got from the family in a round about way. He died in Canadian about the same time. He was a white man of family. I only knew one daughter who married Dave Briggs.
I never knew Absalem Chisholm. There was a William Chisholm son of Tom Chisholm who died near Fort Gibson. There was another William Chisholm who I was not acquainted with he may have been a son of Jesse Chisholm or Ignatius Chisholm.
William Chisholm had sister Mrs Britton and Narcissa Owens was his sister. I married the widow Chisholm. This is how I became acquainted with the Chisholm family.
There were no other sisters besides the two I have named of the Chisholm stock, Mrs Britton had several children they are all dead but one, her name is Alice. Mrs Britton has one daughter and one son living.
James Chisholm had a wife who was a Cherokee. I think James Chisholm died in this country.
Also the wife of Ignatius Chisholm was a Cherokee. She had one daughter who married a man by the name of Briggs. I was not acquainted with any of the sons of Ignatius if he had any.
The William Chisholm I was acquainted with I think was a Cherokee.
I came her in about 1834 and he was in the country when I came here according to my knowledge William Chisholm never married. I dont know whether he left any children or not. I dont know whether the Jim Chisholm who had a Cherokee wife had any children or not.
(Mentioned: Jim Chisholm was a brother of John D Chisholm (died in Maysville in 1834).
Tom Chisholm was a son of John D Chisholm.
A George Chisholm died in Maysville who he thinks was a son of John D Chisholm as well.
Ignatius Chisholm died in Canadian about the same time – he had a daughter that married Dave Briggs.
Tom Chisholm had a son named William Chisholm that died near Fort Gibson.
There was another William Chisholm who may have been a son of Ignatius or Jesse Chisholm.
William Chisholm had sisters Mrs Britton and Narcissa Owen.
William Wilson b. 1811 married widow Chisholm (Mrs Britton?). Mrs Britton had one living child named Alice (others had died) and one son.
James Chisholm had a Cherokee wife and he died in the country.
Ignatius Chisholm married a Cherokee and had a daughter who married a man named Briggs).
