There appear to be more than one James Goin in Granville Co, NC.  One James is “insolvent”, the other one is buying up and acquiring real estate (in other words, not insolvent) – both have a son named William . . .  One is reported mulattoe, the other is reported white.  This is also true for Thomas, Michael, William, Joseph – all have multiple people with same names on same years.  Some are mulattoe, some are white – the chart and tithe list below helps sort them out (who is who).

Granville County, North Carolina:  Granville County is especially confusing – it has at least two separate Going families living in the same county with several people having the same names.  I have created a chart based on tithe records I have located to attempt to differentiate the families:

Michael Gowen appeared in the 1750 tax list of Granville County, paying a tax on two tithables.

1749 March 5 – Deed: purchse from Robert Jones, Jr, 5 Mar 1749/50, , Granville, North Carolina, USA.  “William Going “of Granville County” received a deed from Robert Jones, Jr, “attorney.” of Surry County, Virginia to 910 acres on both sides of Grassy Creek near the Virginia state line for £25 March 5, 1750, according to Granville County Deed Book A, page 343.” Granville Co, NC
