FACTS and NOTES:
Agnes Goin was born before 1722 (I estimate a 1711-1721 birth year). She was in a court case filing suit against Gilbert Gibson in 1743, she must have been at least 21 years of age by that time. She may have been married to a “Goin” who had died by 1743 when she first shows up in records filing suit in Louisa Co, Va. It is also possible that Goin was her birth surname and she never was married.
There is a Moses Goin in the area that has a wife named Agnes in 1777 in Louisa Co, Va records. I rule him out at this Agnes’ husband though, as he was in the area and shows up in court records occasionally. It would not make sense for the time that Agnes would be filing suits if she had a husband at that time. So the Moses Goin that shows up in records in 1761-63 in next-door Albemarle Co, Va and then later in Louisa Co, Va would not appear to be her husband. It is possible that he was her son though – maybe named after his father.
If she had the surname “Goin” due to a marriage to a “Goin” who died, then there are some potential husbands she may have had. For example, nearby in Amelia County, a Gideon Gowen was on the tax lists in 1738 and 1739. No other Gideon Gowen appears in records in the area – so it is possible that this Gideon died within a few years of his last tithe list. There a few Goins that show up, but then disappear from records in Virginia that could have been her husband that died (if she had previously been married), they include:
- 1703-13 John Gowin of Hanover Co, Va (Hanover Co, Va was close)
- 1705-15 James Gowing b. abt 1705-15 of Henrico Co, Va (died some time btw 1738-1743 in nearby Henrico Co, Va – unfortunately the Court Records from 1738-43 are missing in Henrico Co, Va).
- 1707-1717 Gideon Gowen b. abt 1708-18 of Amelia Co, Va (Amelia Co, Va was close)
- 1710 Moses Goin b. bef. 1712 in Stafford Co, Va (Stafford Co, Va was in the Northern Neck, but several Goins moved south – so this is possible – he only appears in one record in Stafford Co, Va.)
- 1703 Ambrose Gowen of Stafford Co, Va (Y1) (Ambrose Gowen disappears from records in Stafford Co, Va in the 1720s).
The difficulty for modern researchers who like to rely on Y-DNA to prove family lines is that if Agnes had children with her “Goin” husband before he died, and then had other children afterwards by other men (as it appears) then her children she had with her Goin husband would have different Y-DNA signatures than those children she had later with different fathers. This could very well be the case with Agnes. She could very well be the matriarch of several lines of Y-DNA in the different Goin lines due to having male children before her husband’s death, and then later other male children with different fathers out of wedlock who carried the Goin name.

(NOTE: Does anyone else find it of interest that the same court term that Agnes Goin wins her lawsuit against Gibson that the Church Wardens show up to charge her with having a bastard child? It almost looks like Gibson may have tipped off the Church Wardens after losing the lawsuit).
