(Note: Apparently, Thomas Harrison was not to be denied in his aggressive pursuit of the above judgment against John Blackwood. It appears John Blackwood had removed to Spanish controlled Florida, and Thomas Harrison, David Rees, and William Ervin traveled to Florida and took 5 slaves of John Blackwood’s to satisfy the debt. This resulted in Spain writing a letter of complaint to the United States, and then in return, Thomas Jefferson replied with a letter to the Governor of Georgia… see below):

…..
1792 July 3 – Thomas Jefferson letter to the Governor of Georgia regarding Thomas Harrison, David Rees, and William Ervin confiscating 5 slaves from John Blackwood in Spanish Florida:
“To the Governor of Georgia
Philadelphia July 3, 1792
….
Sir,
I have the honor to enclose to your Excellency the copy of a letter I have received from his Catholic Majesty’s representatives here in consequence of a complaint from the Governor of Florida that three inhabitants of the State of Georgia, to wit, Thomas Harrison, David Rees, and William Ervin had entered the Spanish territory and brought from thence 5 negro slaves the property of John Blackwood, a Spanish subject without his consent, in violation of the rights of that State and peace of the two countries. I had formerly had the honor of sending you a copy of the convention entered into between the said Governor and Mr Seagrove on the part of the United States for the mutual restitution of fugitive slaves. I now take the liberty of requesting your Excellency to inform me what is done or likely to be done with you for the satisfaction of the Spanish Government in this instance. Nobody knows better than your Excellency the importance of restraining individuals from committing the peace and honor of the two nations, and I am persuaded that nothing will be wanting on your part to satisfy the just expectations of the Government of Florida on the present occasion. I have the honor to be with great respect, your Excellency’s, etc.
Signed: Thomas Jefferson. ”
…
“To Messrs de Viar and de Jaudenes.
Philadelphia, July 3, 1792
….
Gentlemen,
I have laid before the President your letter of June 26 with the papers accompanying it on the subject of the robbery supposed to have been committed within the territory of Florida by three citizens of the State of Georgia and I have it in charge to assure you that due inquiry shall be immediately made into the transaction, and that everything shall be done on the part of this Government which right shall require, and the laws authorize. I have written to the Governor of Georgia on this subject, and shall not fail to communicate to you the result of our inquiries and proceedings on this business. I regret the delay which the circumstance of distance may occasion, but this is unavoidable. I have the honor to be with great respect and esteem, Gentlemen, etc.
Signed: Thomas Jefferson.”

Personally appeared Benjamin Harrison. Before me one of the justices of the peace for the said County and made oath that on the 14th instant there came 5 Indians to his house with guns and other warlike instruments and asked him for rum and he said he had none. They still insisted he had rum and he said he had not untill they give him the lye and damned ly and with that he ordered them to begone and in a small space of time he was riding round his cornfield the way to his boat yard and saw four of the said five Indians taking corn out of his field without his lieve. Sworn to before me this 17t day of September 1795. Benjamin Harrison. Francis Spann, JP. Letters written found online at Georgia Archives Digital Collection

1813 April 26 – Honoured Sir,
I have been informed that Wm B Bulock Esquire has wrote two or three times to you for the Commission of the officers of the Rifle Company raised in the Little Ogechie or 7 Company district in Chatham County. And have not received any answer on the occasion. This has keep the 7th Company in a perfect confusion from the time the Rifle Company has been formed the officers has been so much abused that commanded the 7th Company that they have been forced to resign and the men will not elect Officers until they know the result of the Rifle Company the District is now at such a pass that they acknowledge no law an every man refuses to inform the law there fore I have thought proper to write to you to prevent strife among ourselves and a few lines from you will put a final stop to this confusion. Other wise forceable means will have to be resorted to to restore order in that Company. Not a man has attended a muster from that district this 6 months at the General Review this Spring the officer then commanding the Little Ogechie Company wont with orders to the Non-Commissioned officers, and they damed him and his orders, and not a man would turn out withstanding the commissioned officer summoned many of them himself.
This disorderly conduct has indust me to write to you to know if those men will be commissioned to command the Rifle Company. If this should be the case the 7 Company will be broke up as there will not be more than 7 or 8 men that has not joined the Rifle Company in that District. Your Excellence will have the goodness to write to me respecting the commission as quick as it may be convenant, that I may proceed to the most adviseable mans getting this district in order.
Dear Sir am your most obediant servant.
William Harrison, Major
2 Batt, 35 Regiment, Georgia Militia.

1818 Aug 20 – Georgia, Chatham County.
Dear Sir,
I have taken the liberty of writing to you for information as respects the manor of inforceing the law against those persons that refused to turn out after bein Drafted for the Service of the United States, and fled from their homes so that the officers could not coerce their attendance into the service before the detachments was marched to their general places of destination. But has since retunred to their homes By and Act of the United States of 1795 sc 5 Those persons are punishable by a Court martial by a fine, the fine to be collected by the Marshall of the district in which the fine may be adjudged. But this act points out no method by which the Court Martial can be convened ….
Humble Servant, William Harrison, Lieut. Colonel, 3d Regiment, Georgia Militia.

Located on the north boundary of the Amelia Island Plantation on Amelia Island, FL. This cemetery is on the original Spanish Land Grant of 1793 given to Samuel Harrison. Harrison family members are buried here as well as the re-burial of Indian remains found during an archealogical dig in the area. Neither Samuel Harrison (1737-1818), nor his wife, Isabel McQueen English Harrison has a monument here. However, there is no local stone on Amelia Island and most early markers were made of wood which have long since deteriorated.

Samuel Harrison, a prominent planter on Amelia Island, maintained a home at Old Town Fernandina. A captain in the South Carolina loyalist militia who moved from Beaufort, South Carolina to Amelia Island during the English period, Harrison was among the thousands of loyal British subjects who fled from patriot officials and militia after the evacuation of Charleston and Savannah in 1782. In the 1790s, Harrison owned seven slaves and acquired “Harrison’s Old Fields” and Seymour’s Point from the Spanish Crown. Later, between the 1820s and 1840s Harrison signed several memorials to the Territorial Council, Congress, and governing officials regarding various affairs and improvements in northeast Florida. He moved easily between his town home at Fernandina and his island and mainland plantations, which contained extensive fields, a road, and buildings (Confirmed H 16 Spanish Land Grants; WPA 1940 3:215-218; Siebert 1929 2:376; Carter 1959 23:295, 479, 600).
