Possibility 2:  If Mary Going was married to Thomas Hughes and used the Hughes name:

It appears Mary may have been living with one child, while Thomas was living with another according to the 1850 US Census in Pickens, Ala.  The two households are just one page away from eachother in the census, so they may even be adjacent to eachother.  Thomas Hughes is living with a William Hughes, a physician.  Mary is living with J. W. Brandon and wife Eliza Brandon (likely Thos and Mary’s daughter).

RESEARCH NOTES ON HUGHES:

(NOTE: In comparing the deeds from Union Co, SC v Chester Co, SC for the Hughes families, the Union Co, SC appears to be close to where the Going family was living. The Hughes family of Chester Co, SC was living on Terrible Creek near Fairforest – which is the southern end of Union Co, SC – which is quite a bit further away.

The Chester Co, SC Hughes family appears to move to Kentucky. Thomas L B Hughes of Union Co, SC moves to Pickens Co, AL, which is where the Going family moves.

NOTES ON HUGHES:

There are two distinct Hughes families in Union and Chester Counties. One lives near the southern half of Union County near the Fairfield County border. Their deeds indicate that most of them moved to Kentucky.

The Hughes family of Union County appears to be close to the Going family. Thomas Hughes lives adjacent to Joshua Palmer and purchases 96 acres land from him in 1808.

In 1837 a deed states that Thomas L B Hughes is the son of Thomas Hughes.

In 1839 Thomas Hughes writes a deed conveying slaves in his son’s possession. His son, Thomas L B Hughes is living in Pickens County, Alabama.

In 1848, Thomas Hughes decds’ last will and testament is probated in Lowndes County, Mississippi. The will was written in Pickens County, Alabama in 1840. He leaves his entire estate to his son, and names his son as “Thomas Leonard Baxter Hughes”. Thomas L B Hughes is the administrator of his father’s estate.

Additionally, when looking at the Lowndes County Circuit Court index, the following cases can be found in the index:

1) First Case: In 1847 – James M Wynne v Thomas Goyne, Thomas L B Hughes & Richard Michael Turner. re: a negro named Ben (Case ID 7239 83). Lowndes Co, MS

2) Second Case: In 1847 – John Stephenson & John Bridges v. Thomas B Goyne, Thomas L B Hughes, Richard Turner & Henry Jones. re: a negro named Jim. (Case ID 7373 86). Lowndes Co, MS

Re: Whether Mary Going had children with Thomas Hughes

I’m still looking at the Hughes connections – unfortunately there are no records that directly show any relationship to definitively verify if Mary Going ever had a relationship with Thomas Hughes. I want to believe there must be something (based on claims of prior researchers), but I can’t find documents or records to confirm what relationship they may have had.

Records that support a relationship of some kind (circumstantial evidence):

The following 4 items show that T L B Hughes obviously knows the Going family and possibly has a relationship with them beyond just friendship:

1) 1824 Chester Co, SC as a Deed Witness: T L B Hughes witnessed a deed from Isaac Going and Thomas Going to Joseph Reed for their 107 acres in 1824 in Chester Co, SC.

This must be the land that Drury Going b. 1749 was living on when he died, the same 107 acres of land that Sarah Going left to her son Thomas Baxter Going in her will.

2) 1847 Lowndes Co, MS lawsuits re slaves: T L B Hughes is a co-defendant with Thomas Baxter Going in two lawsuits in 1847 regarding two slaves, one lawsuit is over a slave named Ben, the other lawsuit over a slave named Jim, in Lowndes Co, MS. I haven’t ordered these yet from the Lowndes Library, but I will do so soon.

Jim and Ben mentioned in the Lowndes Co, MS lawsuits may be the same slaves that Thomas Hughes conveyed to his son T L B Hughes in Union County, SC as documented in the following deeds. What Thomas Baxter Going has to do with the lawsuits in Lowndes County, MS is unclear, but a copy of the case files will hopefully clear that up.

Transcripts of the deeds in Union Co, SC:

1837 Jan 1 – T L B Hughes to T Hughes Sr, Deed bk Y, p 190. Union Co, SC
…. I T L B Hughes acknowledge to have this day received of my father Thomas Hughes the following negroes to wit, Pat a negro woman about 40 years old, Jim a negro man about 35, Sam a negro man about 26 years old, Hannah a negro woman about 23 years old, Brummet a negro boy about 13 years old …
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKJ-LHK8?i=353&cat=340217

1839 Nov 21 – Thomas Hughes Sr to T L B Hughes, Deed bk S12, p 3. Union Co, SC
… I Thomas Hughes Sr of the Dist and State afsd for and in consideration of the love and affection which I have and bear towards my natural son Thomas L B Hughes, late of the District and State afsd, but now residing in the County of Pickens and State of Alabama and in consideration of the sum of 5 dollars … deliver unto Thomas L B Hughs the following negro slaves, to wit, old Jim, Sam, Hannah, Brummit, and Andy now in the State of Alabama on the plantation of the said Thomas L B Hughs in the said County of Pickens and also any child or children the said woman Hannah may have had before the execution of this deed … also the following named negro slaves to wit: Charles, Ben, Dennis, young Sam, Daniel, Abram, Charlotte, Sall and Poll, now of the District and State first above mentioned and in my possession
Signed: Thomas Hughs
Wit: William Ray, Z P Hernden
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKJ-LQFD?i=21&cat=340217

Note also, that Thomas Hughes conveys all his slaves, including a slave named Jim, to T L B Hughes in his Last Will & Testament that he wrote in 1840 in Pickens Co, AL that was probated in Lowndes Co, MS in 1848.

3) 1860 US Census: T L B Hughes’ 1860 US Census in Lowndes Co, MS shows David Lang age 19 living with him. This David Lang appears to be the son of William Lang and Mary Parmelia Going Lang. If T L B Hughes is a son of Mary Going that is living with the Lang family in the 1850 US Census in Pickens Co, AL, then David Lang would be his nephew, and would be a good explanation for why they are living in the same household.

4) Middle name of Baxter: The middle name of Baxter also draws interest due to the frequency of Drury Going’s descendants in this time that also received that middle name.

There is some evidence of a relationship, but in all it is very circumstantial – nothing direct.

WHAT MARY GOING IS THE MARY GOYNE IN PICKENS COUNTY, ALABAMA:

Most researchers reasonably believe that the evidence leans towards the Mary Goyne that is buried in Pickens Co, Alabama is the daughter of Drury Going b. 1749.

I do not disagree that this “may” be the case. But there is an alternative.

Circumstantial Evidence that Mary Goyne of Pickens Co, AL may be Thomas Baxter Goyne’s spouse:

By the time Drury Going’s children move to Alabama, they appear to have chosen whether they are going to use the spelling of their surname as “Going” or “Goyne”.  Two of his children in particular appear to choose the spelling of “Goyne” – James Goyne b. 1777, and Thomas Baxter Goyne b. between 1788-1793.
