Likely siblings: (The following two names are listed on Sarah Hollis’ probate papers as her “heirs” receiving an equal share as her other children in probate.  This likely means that James Hollis Sr and Sarah Hollis had their own children named John and Moses.  These would appear to be a different set of John and Moses Hollis than Moses Hollis and Catherine Hollis’ children – so look for two different John and Moses about the same age as they are cousins likely living nearby or living in the same areas).

March 4, 1800, Benjamin Hollis proves up a deed for William Hollis who had purchased 100 acres of land from Gideon Whittehead (or Gideon Whitted) of Chester County, SC. He indicated in the deed that the land was for Samuel Hollis, son of William Hollis. The land was along the wouth fork of the Little River bounded by George Evans land, John Lee’s land, Joseph Reynolds’? land, and along Kirkley’s land, and along Stephen Titshew’s? line.
The land was originally granted to Thomas Hill on January 2, 1788. (The deed’s first page is very difficult to read towards the bottom – see below).

1800 Deed_N_0020a Gideon Whitted to Wm Hollis released to Samuel Hollis

1800 Deed_N_0021a marked snip

The fact that William Hollis purchased this land on behalf of his son Samuel Hollis gives at least some evidence that his year of birth was probably fairly close to 1780.  At 20 years old, he is old enough to be married and have his own children, and likely needs his own house and land for his young family, but if he is under-age (under 21 years old) he is considered a minor and too young to legally make a contract for a deed.  It would make sense that his father, William Hollis, purchased the land for him in this situation.

This Samuel Hollis (son of William Hollis) having a year of birth around 1780 makes it a bit confusing, as his uncle Samuel Hollis has a year of birth estimated to be about 1775.  So they will be very close in age, and it may be easy to confuse their documentation.  (Will need to confirm my theory of Samuel’s age above with other documents if available).

In 1802, buyers at James Hollis Sr’s estate are:
Sarah Hollis (his wife/widow), Benjamin Hollis (son), James Hollis (son), Littleton Hollis (son), Burrel Hollis (son), William Hollis (son)

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named Officers and served as herein stated – he thinks in May 1776 he volunteered and went to Sullivan’s Island – Captains Marion & Boykin & Colonel Thompson [sic, William Thomson] commanded – and served at that place until it was taken by the British –When the Army retreated to Charleston – and that they afterwards retreated to Camden and served there under Colonel Lacey (afterwards General Lacey) after serving his tour of three months as a volunteer he served three months as substitute for Edward Thornton (or Thorington) and that he continued in the Army till the end of the War – States that he was taken prisoner at Cintilles [sic, Satilla River] when under Captain Wynn – by Burntfoot Brown and the Indians – and was marched 15 miles into the country under guard and was then set at liberty – that he was with Marion on several scouting parties – and that he was stationed at Orangeburg at the close of the War – that Lacey commanded him – and he further states that by reason of old age and the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively to the precise length of his service but according to the best of his recollection he served not less than five years – first three months at Sullivan’s Island & Charleston as above stated and afterwards three months as substitute – and afterwards a volunteer until the close of the war – it being not less than five years that he served and that he was not employed in any civil pursuit.
