The 1820 census is still in Rutherford, NC, so at least the first child was born in NC. They probably just could not remember when the lines changed and marked him as being born in TN with the rest of the children.

Also living in Rutherford Co, NC in 1820 according to the US Census is Hugh Gowen age 16-25, and his wife also 16-25, along with 2 male children under 10 years of age.

There are two Elizabeth Gowens listed as well – both are 26-44, both have a daughter age 16-26, both have a daughter age 10-15.  The only difference is that one has a son under 10 years of age, the other has a son that is between 10-15.

The 1830 US Census in Blount Co, TN shows – Males:  Edward Goin age 30-40, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 5-10, and 1 male under 5.  Females:  1 female 60-70 (mother or mother in law?), 1 female 20-30 (wife), 2 females 5-10, 2 females under 5.  Blount Co, TN is two counties away from Bradley County, TN that will be created in 1836.

In 1840 Edmon Gowan is listed as 40-49, other males in home are 1 male 20-29, 1 male 15-19, 2 males 5-9, 2 males under 5.  Females are 1 female 30-39, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 10-14, and 1 female under 5.

and was probably the one who taught your relative, Her sister Gertrude was a teacher also, but she never taught at Strang. Grandmother never taught school that I know of. Naomi Crag was the Wife of Gene Craig in Strang. Gene’s Sister Nellie Jane Craig married my Grandfather Alvin Goins’s Brother Thomas StraleyGoins and they had three Children she died young and he remarried.
