Letter, William Eubanks, Jackson County, to Governor Holmes, regarding Sterling Dupree’s election for Colonel and efforts to discredit him
Series 488: Administration Papers, 1769, 1788-1817; n.d.
1816 (or 1815), Nov 26th – Jackson County
(The letter is difficult to read, the following is a summary of what I could make out in the letter):
Sir, I have just our horses from a long journey and five days before leaving home we had an Election in our county at the court house for a Colonel at which Sterling Dupree was unanimously elected by all the officers that was there my self and Walter Davis excepted.
Davis himself wrote to Capt Ware that he was a Candidate and his name was put up and he got not a solatary vote.
And as to my own part had I have been there and have 50 votes, I —– have give them unto Dupree I find there is a Scandalous petition discredited . . . handed about to certain individuals to the great injury of him the said Dupree stating he plundered negroes schooners or in the comments heard it is a man should be blamed for taking his own for the negroes were Duprees own property that the Spanish Commandant had extorted from him contrary to the Spanish Law . . .
Walter Davis him self had no wright to a Comsn for he was . . . proved to be a “traytor a coward and a Tory”.
He states that the petition is a plot by Walter Davis who is the sole starter of the petition.
He again closes by calling Walter Davis a “traytor a coward and a Tory”.
Accuses Walter Davise of giving “fals sertificates” against Dupree
